What would microsoft do?
« on: September 22, 2014, 07:59:41 pm »

I'm not saying Microsoft is going to buy dwarf fortress. I'm just wondering what would happen if they did. (I was thinking of how microsoft offered 2 billion for minecraft, and that minecraft is inspired by df)

I think they would add textures, PUT IN A WORTHWHILE TUTORIAL (wouldn't complain if they did) and remove the random animals such as gray langurs so they didn't have to make textures for them.

I'm assuming they would ruin DF

So they would ruin DF?

Look at minecraft; now imagine a rated M version of that.  In 2d.  With lots of inane things.  Mojaang (w.e.) peddled the crap out of that game.  Commercialization is a bitch.

I think it would be rated AO (the highest rating reserved for very inappropriate stuff and extreme violence like dismembering)

Well, we all know they're going to wreck Minecraft. Let's just hope Toady One has more self respect than Mojang.

If Toady was offered a very large sum of money, not to mention 2 billion dollars I would not blame him in the least for selling DF. He could do lots of good for the world with that amount of cash. That said I don't think it would be as good a game in 10 or even 5 years like it can be if Toady doesn't do so.

I might be putting too much faith in him, but I don't think that Toady would sell DF. Or at least I hope he doesn't. Selling DF to a commercial entity would ruin his dream for the game, turning it into something that he hates.

I wouldn't be so pessimistic. Toady is a guy who won't even do merchandising deals.

They would leave Dwarf Fortress pretty much as it is, but drive their entire gaming division into the ground trying adding multiplayer.

If they added a link to Social Media.

And your dwarves started tweeting their thoughts...

On topic: I don't think Toady would sell. But, if in some alternate universe he did, I think Microsoft would totally ruin it. I don't know how.. But they would.

Slightly off topic: For those that don't know, Notch sold Minecraft because it was way too stressful for him. He never intended it becoming such a big hit and although he did make a lot of money from it he just didn't want to deal with it anymore. As someone said "If you hate your job and get offered two million dollars to quit your job then you better believe I would quit my job. They should be saying 'You get two million dollars AND get to quit your job'"

Not quite 2 million dollars, but still.

So yeah, he's not likely to sell ;P

I don't think Df would be rated anything more than teen. It only has descriptions of gory violence, blood is minimally rendered, and it has nothing crude, sexual, or related to gambling.

A better question is what would EA do if they bought DF?
