If they bought it, they'd run themselves ragged trying to make it 3D, spend a whole year and millions of dollars, and then throw it into development hell forever.

A better question is what would EA do if they bought DF?

We've already had that thread, it was a lot like this one. An even better question is what would Charlemagne do if he bought DF.

In order to avoid alienating the highly devoted existing playerbase, while still widening appeal, EA would release their own 'hyper-realistic' tileset, which consists entirely of scaled down photos. The results of this are about what you'd expect, and nobody uses it outside of extreme challenge games.

To recover from so disastrous a mistake, corporate decides to avenge some good will by adapting Masterwork (V9.6c) as a semi-official DLC, for half the usual price per modified (but not new) RAW entry. The sale, though generous, is a disaster because of the continued existence of the free original version, which remains in active development. Growing frustration with the game's management then leads them to do something drastic to re-earn player respect: stop working on patching features and focus on improving the increasingly cumbersome program's performance.

As a part of this widely acclaimed measure DF's RAW system is scrapped in favor of a closed source, "more streamlined" approach. Other measures include abstracting the health and injury system, removing most thermodynamic calculations, and removing the (still unfinished) beekeeping mechanics. 38 hours, 42 minutes, and 49 seconds later, the last post is made on these forums, and the official forums slow in activity significantly.

With DF thoroughly dead, EA attempts to reboot the franchise with Slaves to Armok: Chapter 3: Dwarven Combat: Histories of Struggle and Honor, An over the shoulder massively multiplayer hack and slash. The game is released for Xbox One, PS4, and (surprisingly) the Wii U; and is received with generally positive but underwhelming sales and reviews. A PC port is promised, but never delivered. Corporate kills the game shortly after due to the generally mediocre gains it produces.

DF takes the old world geography.

The Dwarves become Byzantine/Georgia
Humans are obvs the Christain Europe and ME
Elves are Brittish/Spanish
Kobolds are Northerners
Goblins are the filthy Russians.

Orcs are mongolian DLC.

And every civ has its own DLC unit skin pack.

Heh, yeah, and then he'd get sued by Paradox for ripping off every game of theirs ever.

Say what you want, but Microsoft used to make kick-ass games in the past.

Microsoft did not make a single game (ok maybe Minesweeper), they sold them. Microsoft is a publisher, not a game studio.

To be fair, Minesweeper is a kick-ass game.

...

I just used the word "kick-ass" in a non-ironic manner. What's happening to me!?

I'm pretty sure that if any large company was to buy DF in its current form, it would be to salvage the world and site generation algorithms, which would then likely be used to drive some MMO game boasting some crazy figures for world size.

I don't think any large company would risk making a hugely more complicated Minecraft that DF with pretty 3D graphics could be. Even if, the difference in how much they'd want to leave in the game is so huge, it would be easier to make a more complex Minecraft from scratch than keep cutting stuff from DF.

While I suppose anyone has their price, Toady's would probably start far above what any company would pay. At least until he gets bored with coding DF. So far it's obvious he's doing exactly what he wants to be doing, and it would take a huge stack of cash to make him forfeit what he's built and quit unfulfilled. I mean, he's currently getting paid and praised for following his dream, which in many ways is pretty close to as good as life gets. And that's what you have to put the price tag on, not the stack of code that makes DF.

As someone said "If you hate your job and get offered two million dollars to quit your job then you better believe I would quit my job. They should be saying 'You get two million dollars AND get to quit your job'"

I feel compelled to point out... you are off by several orders of magnitude.  It wasn't two million dollars.

It was two BILLION dollars.  With a B.  BILLION.  As in, Sagan.

Toady would sell DF for 2 billion.  Who wouldnt?  I think any of us would sell a baby to Satan for 2 billion dollars.  As RPS wisely pointed out in their article on this, the idea of 2 billion dollars makes the brain shut down.

But Notch didn't get 2.5 Billion. He's at least a 51% shareholder, putting it at 1.25 Billion. Still, a fuck ton of money.

Notch has/had a 48% share in Mojang IIRC.
