The Washington Post has some more information on what's going down in Portland.
Link here, though being the Post paywalls are a thing.
A few choice quotes:
One widely shared video showed two men in military garb on the street at night taking a young man wearing all black into custody. On the video, the two agents do not answer shouted questions before putting the man into an unmarked minivan and driving away.
On Friday, Customs and Border Protection issued a statement taking responsibility for the apprehension and asserting its agents were wearing gear that identified them as CBP personnel.
CBP agents went after that individual because they suspected he was involved in “assaults against federal agents or destruction of federal property,” the statement said. “Once CBP agents approached the suspect, a large and violent mob moved towards their location. For everyone’s safety, CBP agents quickly moved the suspect to a safer location for further questioning.”
The agency said the CBP agents identified themselves and were wearing CBP insignia during the apprehension.
CBP’s acting commissioner, Mark Morgan, tweeted Friday that his agents are not hiding their affiliation and are “clearly marked as federal [law enforcement officers] & have unique identifiers.”
Ugh, I should have probably assumed that if federal agents were going to go gestapo somewhere, it'd be in DHS (where CBP is located). I can only hope that this gets enough attention to prompt them pulling back.
I tried looking for the statement mentioned in the article and had trouble finding an official statement. Did find
this gem from yesterday though listing a "snapshot of the lawless destruction and violence." Now there is a smattering of not-great actions in there, I'll admit, but when the best you can do is phrasing like "Violent anarchists graffitied [X location]," "mortar-style fireworks," "firing wrist rockets at the facility" (slingshots? batmen?)... maybe rethink the press release plan? One would think DHS would at least be better at spinning it.
