Edit:  In fact, here's the "best" 5 seconds which makes me particularly upset.  I'm always calling for more body cameras.  Just... that real, visceral disgust from the officer- while instantly moving to cover up the incident.  It's second nature for them to defend each other.  I actually understand that a lot.  I haven't worked in the police or military, but I've worked dangerous jobs.  That instinct to cover for peers, hiding the truth from safe observers who won't understand, is actually relatable.

One of the local unions was asked why they would ever oppose body cameras, even though cops are found innocent in 95% of cases where there are body cameras. The response was that cops are found innocent in 100% of cases where there are not body cameras.

The Minneapolis riots in response to George Floyd's death have now set the Police Precinct on fire. National Guard has been called, but not yet arrived. Looting and destruction of shops is ongoing.
Getting pretty ugly out there...

I've seen a bemusing number of Facebook friends cheering on the looters and arsonists.
Like, "fuck yeah! They burnt down McDonald's! That'll teach those abusive cops!" ...or something? I don't know. ???

The Minneapolis riots in response to George Floyd's death murder on camera by a cop have now set the Police Precinct on fire (after the cops and AG came out saying prosecution of the cop that murdered someone on camera with zero mitigating circumstance wasn't justified). National Guard has been called, but not yet arrived. Looting and destruction of shops is ongoing.

Added a little context there.

Context here is that most of the major building damage has been hitting chain stores and shit, out of towner stuff, generally the kind of thing that's pretty predatory and fucks with that local economy by leveraging out of area resources to undercut competitors and crap. Most of the impetus behind that is 'cause the cops in the area the police murdered someone on camera at is majority (Like 90+% or something) staffed by non-locals, too. So they're basically (primarily, if not entirely -- riots are messy shit, maybe don't act like an abusive occupying army and/or go to bat for explicit murder and trigger them) punching back at folks from outside the area, that's come in and shat on the locals, one way or another.

Step one to not getting your business hit in a riot like this: Don't try too hard to put locals out of business, also treat your local workers really damn well, maybe make sure you're throwing your weight rapidly and without hesitation behind bringing a fucking murderer to very speedy account. Simple things, really.

The idea of riots being carefully coordinated to target big business is pretty hilarious, ta for that. :))
So is the idea of smashing up random shops being somehow a righteous course of action, for that matter.

There's not much righteous here, just desperation in the face of folks getting literally murdered on goddamn camera and the powers that be not just doing fuckall about it but apparently actively trying to prevent anything being done. Smashing up shops is at least a hell of a lot more righteous than fuckin' murder or trying to go to bat for a straight up no-question, literally on goddamn tape, murderer.

Nothing really much coordinated about it, though, just a matter of most of the folks involved having a relatively specific source of ire. You don't need coordination to know who ain't local or who don't got your back, most of the time.

Those with no power to do much else need to break things to get noticed.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Note to anybody who's using the "Why won't these coward protesters target a police station then, huh?" take: The protests have now targeted police stations, and MPD is running scared.

Don't excuse the destruction of the rioters with the vulnerability of those who don't.

More like MPD has withdrawn to the richer, whiter parts of the city.

Yeah that's pretty cool, if they'd started with that and not a whole heap of wholescale, directionless destruction I would be impressed.

No way to make the news without rioting, police execute civilians without cause every day here. It took them a while to get organized enough to assault an entire police station.

One of CNN's reporters was arrested by police this morning, with no reason given and no apparent cause. Notably, CNN had several reporters on the scene, and all were treated very well by police, except for the one black reporter.
