Obsidian Swords

Just how good are they now? My dwarves seem to favor them over even high tier stuff like bronze, and I'm not sure if it's a good thing or I need to chuck them down the volcano.

My experience with obsidian matches this page.  Its inferior to metal weapons.  Ahh, in the new version it seems they are better than they were, but are they better than iron?

All my current wildlife is bugged out birds, so it's not really an option, but from my experiences with early werecreatures and berserk dwarfs, they are at least on par with iron and bronze against flesh, but I can't imagine they'll be as good against armoured enemies and non-organics, which is why them being chosen over bronze gear by default is a tad troubling.

Are they a higher manufacture quality than your metal swords? That may be why they're choosing them.
I always assign specific items to my squads rather than uniforms, you might want to try that. It's a bit tedious but they always equip what I want them to.

Given a free choice, squad positions choose weapons and armor based on trade value, not battle effectiveness.  (There's no clear metric for the latter.)

Obsidian swords are better than wood/bone, just slightly better than glass (almost the same), and worse than any vanilla combat metal. Excellent against flesh, leather, clothing. Sucks hard against all vanilla armor metals (just like glass!)

Use them as starter weapons, traps, trade goods. At least they work now, as opposed to just bruising people.

EDIT:

the only thing better than obsidian (sharpness, not durability) is adamantine/steel
FYI the SHEAR values matter more than the MAX_EDGE

Obsidian's high value for a layer stone is problematic here. Perhaps people should assign weapons made of a specific metal to their soldiers?

Or we could go full aztec on those gobbos, they often dont wear full armor, so chippity-choppity on their limbs.

I second this notion.

Besides, even if it fails, you can always fall back to magma.
In all seriousness, I feel that obsidian swords would make a decent weapon for civilian dwarves if when it hits the fan and you need emergency troops. Obsidian can be mass produced, so equipping a fort with masterwork obsidian swords shouldn't be too difficult.

All my current wildlife is bugged out birds

You can fix that by editing the save raws. remove all [FLIER] tags from non-vermin type creatures.
