Ireland, Mercia and Wales still have their original Kings, Northumbria has appointed a successor. It's just to make the story more interesting, it has no impact on win conditions.

I made that same healer mistake in the last game, but fortunately I was able to recover.

Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

An era of pastoral stability and courtly intrigue reaches new heights in Ireland, while the wars of the many kingdoms continue in Britannia. The Mercians score another blow against the west Saxons, destroying their seige engines and amassing before the gates of Birmingham. The young Northumbrian king Æthelred met his inevitable end, ran down by Pictish riders coming to defend their settlements. The men of Castercliff were also wiped out by Welsh invaders as they tried to flee their craggy town. A new low-point in Northumbria's long decline.

The slowest units moves last: the lowest movement for Mercia is 2, and the catapults have move 1, so they were ambushed.
