I've never made a single hostile move towards Wales

Nor did I make a hostile move towards you, before you did to me

And Pictland and I only came into conflict over the town when he refused to let me have it.

Only person I've been aggressive towards without provocation this entire game was Northumbria.

And I had to attack someone at some point. Way my win condition works. To get to Pictland, I had to go through Northumbria anyway. So your idea of 'self-defense' is flawed.

It not just who strated rhe war, part of why I am still going after you is your cocky threat even though you cant handle the problem you currently have.

Anf your wincon is either kill north and me or welsh/pict/irish. I am not going to let you finish of north then come after me, I have to make sure you cant just go wipe out north unchallenged.

Spoiler: 850 AD (click to show/hide)

The Mercian centre of power shifts ever northward as Wessex consolidate their hold of their south and the Picts, vast though they are, scrabble to hold on to their existing gains.

Yeah. I think I got this pretty securely now. I should be able to manage even if someone comes to try and attack me (due to the near complete lack of fleets by all the other players.
Also, the road network on the main island looks pretty cool.

I am open to discussing the terms of your surrender, now...you can decide amongst yourselves who I'm talking to. (hint: It's not Wales)

Spoiler: 851 AD (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Coinciding with the founding of Bréanainn, the last of the Northumbrians are wiped out in Ireland, paving the way for a glorious decade or so of Irish rule before the Danes arrive in earnest. Unaware of their kinsmen demise, the last Northumbrian king begins his ill-omened raiding attacks with a ragtag levy of spearmen, wreaking revenge on the damnable Picts, leaving their rocky town of Castercliff ill-defended against a possible surprise attack by the Welsh.

But this was all but background noise to the main event of the year: the cataclysmic clash between the hegemonic Mercians and Egberts advancing Wessex force. It was to be known as the Battle of Midfield: King Egbert, hungry for conquest roved well beyond his Winchester stronghold, marching with his merry men into the Mercian town of Midfield. There the Mercians sprung their trap, surrounding the ill-fortified town.

Egbert sent his knights out but they were met with a rain of arrows. The King roared and shook his greatsword from the battlement. His own ranged unit rained down death on the Lincolnfield men on the eastern flank. Their kinsmen met Egbert in open battle.

"Brothers let us kill this usurper!" cried a rugged man from Birmingham who had marched all the way hearing tales of the fall of their home town by the west Saxon men. The battle-weary King had not even drawn blood when he pierced by arrows from on high.

From fifty paces away, the Birmingham man said "Now I will show you why they call us the Finest!" as he shot an arrow straight up in the air. Egbert ran at the Mercian bowmen and was struck by the final arrow falling on his head, splitting his helm and striking him down.

With their king dead, the remaining Wessex forces were quickly routed, the last few healers brutally slaughtered as they cowered beneath the ramparts.

In the north, with his most loyal men, King Coenwulf laughed with joy to hear the news. "Now, we shall crush them!"

But there were many foes still afield.

After a battle, they give a bonus to how quickly your troops heal each turn.

Don't do anythng during battle, though.
