As far as I can tell, collecting stuff off trees isn't possible at the moment.  If you wait, the beans will probably all fall off, whereupon you won't be able to pick them up and might not be able to brew them anyway...

However, wait a couple of updates and hopefully we'll be able to keep a stash of coffee to cut down on all those wasted hours dwarves spend in bed :)

In summer or autumn, you may notice that there's a colored patch around the base of the fruit tree.  Looking at the patch, you'll see a second line ("apples" or something) underneath the main one ("dense grass" or whatever).  Sorry, I'd actually LOOK at one and SAY what it says, but the fortress I created yesterday won't load today (core dump), so....

Anyway, in 0.40.01, the ground underneath the fruit tree becomes "infused" with the fruit.  They don't lie atop the ground like objects.  They become a property of the ground tile itself.  And there is currently nothing in-game that you can do to gather them up, as far as I know.  It's a work in progress.

Thinking about it some more, it occurs to me that drinking coffee would merely make a dwarf sober.  Coffee is therefore less desirable than even water.

Given the dwarf approach to alcohol, Caffeine have any number of effects (or not at all).

It seems like harvesting will be a early priority for the little versions, so do not fret.
