A different take on alien invasion stories
« on: July 06, 2014, 12:16:19 pm »

I recently found a very interesting fanfiction that challenges the typical formula of alien invasion; whereas most films and books that I've read tend to focus on aliens that are far technologically superior to humanity (i.e Independence Day, War of the Worlds), this one has aliens that use military technology about the same as our own 2011-era tech. Our tanks, jets and infantry are actually relatively equal -- if not outright superior -- to theirs, to the point where 4:1 kill ratios are observed between the humans and 'The Race' in some instances, especially when our radar-deflecting stealth fighter tech or airborne lasers get involved. This fic is based off of the 'Worldwar Series', which was originally set in WW2-era Earth; in the alternate timeline of this spin-off, however, we've had roughly 2 years to prepare for the aliens and our military mobilization and R&D has kicked into overdrive.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in a short and simple read that focuses around near-present day humanity being complete badasses and thrashing the alien invaders with our technology and industry. The link is below:

There's also that short story about aliens that invade earth.

Turns out that FTL travel is simple, and spits in the face of all the established rules, which oftentimes causes the scientific theory to go out the window, stalling technological advancement. So, aliens find our planet, expecting to easily take it since we haven't even discovered FTL travel.

They invade with muskets whilst we have missiles.

It goes badly for them, and we easily fight them off, as well as discovering how to do FTL travel, paving the way for a human empire.
AND THEN THE REAL MONSTER WAS MAN!

Obligatory TV Trope: Insufficiently Advanced Aliens.

I have to say I do greatly enjoy this. Still rare to see stories about the modern world and aliens that don't involve humanity either getting curbstomped or pushed into a corner. I'm a little annoyed by not really being able to tell much about the fronts though: It's telling the front I understand the most is the middle-east because it's so fractured that it refers to countries more often then individual cities or territories (fucking Missouri, how does that work?).

Yep, looking forward to a return of Quaritch Maximus Aurelius I, conqueror of the cat people and saviour of humanity. I'm not even kidding, he could be back. Like Jesus, but more genocidal.

Sadly, none of our historical leaders have had the chance to kill millions of cat-people. A lot of cats and a lot of people, but no cat people have died as far as we know.

There were none at hand, though. I have the utmost confidence that Muhammad would go on a genocidal killing spree against the cat-people, were he to meet them.

Which major religious figure wouldn't, though? Jesus would totally ywhwkkake them with a thousand plagues, buddha would six finger death punch 9/10ths of their children, all the hindu critters would just tantric-murder them in an orgy of debauchery and genocide. I'm pretty sure most of our religious figures would have been consummate xenophobes if cat-people showed up. Assuming the cat-people didn't try every time another major one came up, only to get slaughtered again.

Isiah 2:4
"...And He will judge between the nations, And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their plowshares into swords and their swords into battle tanks. Nation will lift up sword against cat people, And never again will they walk this earth."

I don't think Jesus ever caused plagues to come down. I say this because I believe, if Jesus ever existed, he was never actually God.

I just want them to realize the Avatar franchise is so popular that it needs its own animated series.

There would be so much more confusion between this and the other Avatar. It would be beautiful chaos.
