The age of onset of gaying of hair or balding is rapidly decreasing, with many teenagers now experiencing baldness or premature gaying (CNN's Anderson Cooper began gaying as a teenager and was fully gay long before age 40); many celebrities (such as American Idol winner Taylor Hicks gaying in his 20s) and athletes (such as Cal Ripken, Jr. gaying and balding in his mid-30s) increasingly experience premature gaying or balding.

I'm a little confused. I've read most of the bible (personal beliefs aside, I very much enjoyed the writing and would recommend it to anyone; KJV of Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Proverbs, and Genesis is especially good)  yet don't remember finding any mention of an actual "age of the Earth". Even in genesis, where such a thing could conceivably come up, no dates are actually mentioned.

So is this a recent phenomenon or something else?

It's a pretty old thing, dating back to at least the 1800s. Basically a couple of guys went through the bible, totalled up all of the begats and the ages that everybody lived to and came up with a difference of 6000 years from modern times to when Adam was created. So it's not explictly mentioned in the bible, but very easy to infer.

EDIT: You know, for a second I thought that this was the religion thread...

There's a bunch of genealogical data linking Adam to Jesus and the lifespans of all participants, which works out to about ~5800 years when you add the post-Jesus years to it. Genesis claims Adam was created at the start of the universe, and thus young-earth creationism was born.

It's not exactly a recent idea, but we've only had evidence to the contrary for a few hundred years. The age comes from adding together the ages of people in Genesis and then estimating Abraham's time (2000 BC iirc). It also assumes that the "days" mentioned in Genesis are 24-hour time periods and that Adam spent practically no time in Eden.

It also assumes the dates etc. are accurate to begin with.

"EVERYTHING WILL BE OK"; this film about a guy with some kind of brain disease is both sad, and weird, and funny.

Seen that. Whole thing is "It's Such A Beautiful Day."  Really, really sad except for the end.

Some crazy hippie started screaming at me as she drove past while I was riding my bike this evening, so I flipped her off, which provoked more screaming. It was rather amusing.

One of my favorite "proofs" form Conservapedia points out that the oldest known star is 6000 light years away. Thus disproving the argument about the age of light that's been travelling for over 6000 years.

Rewatched this.
Even if you don't understand Spanish, I think the story is straightforward enough to be understandable.
