Some pilgrims are sent carrying the prayers of multiple people that chip in to pay for the passage to Terra in the hope that praying on Terra is more likely to make them happen.

Also, rejuvat isn't a permanent solution. The good rejuvinations can over multiple sessions add 200 years of life, the trash ones maybe 20 to 50, and the really bad ones none at all because they're fatal.

You need augments to really start racking up the years.

Or you could just do what everyone else does and eat babies. Assuming the Rejuvat isn't done by grinding up babies (which... I am not entirely unconvinced it isn't).

If you're a non space marine human in 40k, unless you happen to be an imperial noble of some sort or have some pretty close ties to the mechanicus, the inquisition, or a really resourceful rogue trader, chances are you aren't going to live that long.

Going chaos as a normal human has a 0,01% chance of making you imortal and a 99,99% chance of getting you killed and having daemons maul your soul for eternity.

All that for a chance to have front-row seats should the Golden Crapper ever crap itself, killing the Emperor, and basically the only thing keeping Eye of Terror 2.0  from coming out of His bony ass failing.
If you stand close enough, you might turn into the resurrecting Emperor.

Are you serious? That is hilariously grimdark and just so40K that I wouldn't be surprised.

It was quite brutal actually. Who knew you could suffer major head trauma from undergarments?

I think the official explanation is that it's some sort of stem cell treatment and infants are the subjects with the most of those but yeah it's basically nobles snorting ground-up babies to live longer.

TBH, if there is anything that Imperium has excess off, it's fetuses.

They also mentally and physically stunt toddlers and hollow out their bones so they can be flying cherubs for rich people.

It really says something about this setting that I honestly cannot tell if this is a joke... or they actually do it.

Which honestly makes it ASTOUNDING that the Imperium are as advanced as they are even today

Since the way they are set up would normally cause immense amounts of stagnation. Then again... 30k isn't all that different... so maybe exactly that happened. (just like the Old Republic)

They are very stagnant. It's just that the Imperium is just so immense that the stagnation takes a very long time to grind them down, and they still retain a level of restabilization whenever the pressure lets up. It's like the difference between the campaign of destruction you'd have to undertake to collapse Bhutan vs. the one you'd have to undertake to collapse the USA, except that the scale is a million worlds cast all around the Milky Way.

30k was massively different though. The Great Crusade only lasted two hundred years, and it was about 95% complete when the Horus Heresy happened. All that, starting from just a desolate but unified Earth, to the Imperium of Man at its most powerful. They were anything but stagnant, and had fucking Horus even just waited a few more decades to turn into a drooling Chaos meatpuppet the Imperium would have become unstoppable. As it is, the system they set up was only almost indestructible, and could withstand literally every other powerful group in the galaxy pounding down its doors all at once for ten thousand years to face collapse. Even then, the outcome remains uncertain, with what few aces humanity has left.
