Now, I do have a stipulation. The nobles and admins are running the show, not your dwarves unless they happen to be one of those individuals. I tried to make it clear this Splint was not in charge of anything but the militia - literally nothing.

Heh, I only really did my dorf's requests through him because of the militia's proximity to the shrine (in the initial screencap), that the military was the primary recipient of the prayer metals, and his general killitude. Though a bit of it is because of the background of Nidorf, being friendly or useful to the dwarves most likely to dole out punishment if caught might pay off. No biggie on the story stasis thing, I played by ear on the journals, and only really had one planned out in the event of his death.

Should be interesting to see what you guys come up with in the alternates.

Understandable, the shrine is still there, along with a ward of armok and the swordgolem. Should have a pile of bronze bars and a little iron and steel sitting in it. His focus is likely going to shift to soft metals to be converted into platinum for the earth school and train a metalcrafter or two so we can use something other than salvaged weapons, clothes, and bone items to pay for food and drink imports.
-
Things for everyone else: We can now use the alchemy and herbalist labs to get ironbone/bloodsteel and regular iron and steel respectively if I'm not mistaken. This will make things astronomically easier on the military and potentially even allow use of iron and steel arrows as normal all purpose munitions for the bowdwarves. We have access to flux down in the crystal caverns for transmuting metals as well, or you can make use of our female boulder crab and let her crap out flux for it. We should have a nestbox laying around somewhere.
Or you could stick with "mostly ramshackle looking" theme of mismatched leather and metal that's sort of developed for anyone not in the first squad to increase the likelihood of FUN via combat deaths.

Order trade licenses to get the depot space lookin' like a real market. I keep forgetting to do that, and the Teduk's Fine Good's shop has sat empty for some time now.

The room for the black school of magic is below the skull-shaped room in the school of wizardry area.

The lever near the stairs to the caverns should control the drawbridge down there, but I don't remember if I hooked it up or not. That FB is still at large down there as well.

Also on the bowdwarves: We have bowdwarves, not marksdwarves. Make sure when you make ammo you make the right kind. I know most people just use crossbows and bolts out of habit. They piss through training ammo at an alarming rate too.

I can provide a second tour on request as well.

In the year 1043, a vagabond seeks shelter amongst the ruins of a once proud citadel. He winds his way downwards, marveling at the glory surrounding him, for even in death, its splendor shone through. Though he knows not why, he delves deeper, walking down winding staircases, then jogging, then sprinting down the worn steps. For part of him, what some of the overly philosophical might call the soul, KNEW that this abandoned fortress was not a ruin. It was a prison. And his entry exposed him. Eventually, he made his way to a series of altars, five in total. One of them pulsated with blackness and was surrounded by something he didn’t want to see. The others lay lifeless, drained of colour and power. He fled down the stairs into a room made of polished silver. He went through the series of doors contained within, not knowing why. Eventually a sign caught his attention. It read thusly :
CONTAINMENT CENTER FOR MULTIDIMENSIONAL OBJECTS AND CREATURES
    PRIMARY HOLDING CELLS --->
EMERGENCY QUARINTINE SECTION[OFF-LIMITS TO LEVEL 3 OR BELOW PERSONNEL] <--- 
    TRANSTIMELINE ARCHIVES ^

The bedraggled traveler took the central path, once again trusting in the instinct that had kept him alive for so long. Eventually, the silver corridor took him to a large room, the size of the great dining hall at the vagabond’s old home. It was covered in writing, all of it graven into the silver itself. The first part read thusly:
The wall next to that read thusly:

From the journal of Zagith Zolakreksas
21st Obsidian: I have noticed that Arcvasti’s notes do not follow conventional natural laws. There’s always more of them then there were beforehand and their text changes when you don’t look at them. I have scheduled a meeting with the leader of the Fortress Guard to request rights to experiment with them and the numerous anomalous artifacts that currently adorn our dining hall.

[[OOC: There. Story. Will probably do an actual update later. Riverrun looks very nice, due to its many decorations, but I don't feel like trying to get that much stuff done with the fort just yet.]]

EDIT: [[If it wasn't entirely clear due to my opaque writing style, Riverrun is in sort of a stable time loop that always ends with an arcane disaster that destroys the fort and catapults Splint[And sometimes others] into the far future. The temporal forces involved always pull them back to either the Founding of Riverrun or the Splintering[Caused by Zagith messing with one of the artifacts]. Zigath leaves records of what went wrong in a specially insulated area of the fort so that Splint & Co can learn from their mistakes and hopefully not set off the Nexus Cascade and have to start all over again. This is my personal in-story explanation of the multiple timeline thing.]]

And now an alternate timelines index is ready made, with that as it's intro more or less. And thank you for the compliment on the fort's design.

TIMELINE 1 RECORDS-PRE SPLINTERING

22nd Obsidian: The Captain of the Guard agreed to my request and gave me unlimited clearance. He also confided that Arcvasti had always given him the creeps. With my new authority, I ordered mechanisms and floodgates made for basic containment procedures. I also mandate that a large containment and quarantine area be dug out below the magical altars [Which I'll need to look more closely into over the next few days. The dining hall seems to have more space inside of it then it should, likely due to the presence of so many artifacts in one place distorting space itself. First priority is sealing away everything of this nature. All the artifacts DEFINITELY need to be sealed away. Besides possibly Arcvasti's abacus and Noramsog, the "journal". Their potential uses outweigh the drawbacks of leaving them unsecured. The Dragons probably need to be contained too, probably somewhere where they could be unleashed on enemies in emergencies. Throughout the next few days, I'm going to be investigating anything connected with Arcvasti or his "inventions".

23rd Obsidian: I start with the most famous and, arguably, useful of Arcvasti’s developments: The Armory. It and the surrounding forging area are in full swing, pumping out various metal armour segments to fill the equipment gaps in the ragged militia that comprises most of Riverrun’s military might. Their HIGHEST priority task, however, is making some mithral plate gauntlets for Dailm, who lacks them. The Armory doesn’t seem especially anomalous, or at least, if it IS, the anomaly is beneficial and can be ignored.

24th Obsidian: The drow caravan arrived today. Splint and his men guard the Depot from any more potential ambushed on general principle. It also seems that the Mayor [Who, as a soldier, reports to Splint.] has begun some renovations involving a sky bridge from the main fort to the “Commerce Building”. The Mayor himself, as well as the rest of his archery squad, watches over the negotiations.

AMBUSH! More frost giants stream towards the trading. Splint and his men turn from their vigil over the Depot and charge them. Splint beheads one of the beasts in one stroke and then routs them. The Captain of the Guard taps me on the shoulder.

“Come to the Caverns. There’s something you need to see.”

Down at the Cavern outpost, I saw the corpse of the Forgotten Beast that had been roaming there. As I watched, it hardened into a hard black stone.

“One of the sworddwarves, Urvad, slew it. Stab to the head. Don’t think you’ll be able to contain this. It’s too heavy. We can’t move it even a little bit. But none of the others have done this.”

I reflected briefly on this. This Forgotten Beast must be different from the others, somehow.
Back on the surface
Erib Asothlest, Mayor of Riverrun, watch the Frost Giants get routed. He’d stopped bothering firing arrow at them. THEIR arrows only glanced off. Some of the drowish arrows hit home and cripple the Frost Giants so that Splint could execute them. And then he saw it: A MASSIVE Frost Giant, nearly at eye level with him, on top of the fortifications. A Worldender. Despite its size, it moved quickly and silently, sidling towards Dailm, in his exposed position away from the others. Erib shouted to get his attention. Dailm turned and barely rolled away from the massive wolfram Zweihander the giant wielded. They fought at a standstill for a few seconds, each blocking or parrying the other’s blows. Then the Worldender smiled, looking down at his opponent’s gauntletless hands. And cut off Dailms shield hand. Then his weapon hand Then his left leg. Then his head. Splint arrived, seconds too late to save his comrade. He looked down at the corpse of his friend and looked up at his killed with murder in his eyes. Then he too, dueled the Worldender, matching him blow for blow with his blade made of bifrost. The Worldender spoke:
The end draws near. Can’t you smell it on the wind, taste it in the frigid air?
Splint cut his arm off. Then his other arm. Then his right leg. Then his left leg.
Kneeling before the enraged Splint, limbless, the Worldender spoke again:
WE are not the end. Only the Harbingers. You cannot escape your doom now. It is inevitable. It always was.
Splint SCREAMED and cut the Worldender in half.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

25th Obsidian: Dailms funeral was held today. Splint laid his body to rest in a simple coffin, but commissioned a memorial slab of bifrost, to honour his achievements. He also had bifrost swords made for his squad and promoted Urvad, the Forgotten Beast slayer to his personal squad. Once the mithral plate gauntlets are complete, no disaster like this should ever happen again.

Continuing in my inspection, I looked around the magical Altars. Several members of the Sorcery squad, as well as Tenderroast, were performing the initiation rituals to fully join one of the Schools. None of the Altars seemed dangerous, so I left off there.

27th Obsidian: Urvad received his new plate gauntlets today. My Containment Complex is nearing completion. I have begun researching the abacus Arcvasti made. It seems to move without being touched. Eventually, I realize that it is Gnomish Morse Code. I only manage to catch the tail end of some transmission[From WHERE?]. It read thusly: “…shattered. And then there was one where there had been two” Experimentation on the “journal” is next.

Damn, poor unofficial!Dailm... I thought I'd gotten his gauntlets made but I guess I didn't. Lesson learned for the main fort!

And no need to maintain an alternates archive, I have that handled on a post on the previous page.

Also, random question would you guys prefer orcs or humans should I start another thing? I may finish Carryscar first before doing so.

Are humans playable? If so, I would prefer that if you start another fortress. And if it's possible, could you post in here when you actually start the new fort?

Well shit, that makes it 3 to 3 now (before I saw those posts it was 2 to 2.)

They are but I'm waiting for the final release from the 30 days project before I start a new fort, and may polish off Carryscar beforehand. And I can certainly do that.

I would vote for orcs  8)  but looking forward to it either way

Heh, honestly they suit my playstyle more, but it's been a while and I wanna try both but do it with a story I can share with others (I'm personally in favor of orcs as a sort of do-over with Northernshores, but I'm not gonna count my own preference.)

May do an update for Riverrun at some point tonight after I finish Azura's Star for the second time.

Oh well, I don't mind if we're Orcs, then. I'd just prefer humans because I dunno how to write from the perspective of Orcs.

Oh well, I don't mind if we're Orcs, then. I'd just prefer humans because I dunno how to write from the perspective of Orcs.

Honestly I kinda did a toss up. Corsairs I imagine as using the standard clanader as we understand it in DF due to regular exposure to the chaos dwarves and the odd dwarf on human shipping, and writing/speaking "normally" because they spend/spent so much time working with nonorcs.

In contrast, the majority of other orcs I imagine using a similar but differently named calander, and with their speech potentially varying wildly between orcs/castes (for example, I had the Uruk Gradbul in Northernshores speak with occasionally muddled syntax, run-ons, or improperly puntuated phrases and sentences, along with using an orcish calander and sounding generally archaic in their speech and writing mannerisms while Jerbot's snaga Skabnot and my Corsair Drosh spoke and wrote like any dwarf with basic education and used the dwarven one.)

Kobolds and goblins likely use the orcish calander, while Humans I always imagine as using a modified georgian (that's the name I think,) calander like we use in real life, as do the warlocks since they appear to be human. Well, more or less human, discounting the oddly colored blood, magic, and whatnot. Other races, you got me.

Ah, that's cool, then. I can see what you mean about it fitting more. Sorry, I don't generally read most of the other stories on here, so I missed that in your other thread. (That's where it said you came from, right?)

If you mean where the orcish calander came from, yes, it was this one. You can see the gradual improvement of my story threads if you check them.
