Just Finished Reading and I've got to say.  Wow this place is actually running... smoothly?... yes that's the word but it seems so wrong to use it to describe DF in general.  Way to Go Splint achieving the nearly impossible.

As far as our friends go I'm going to be glad to see them in action again along side these newer races.  and releasing that many people might not recognize the name I've picked I'm going to link the reference point.

http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Headshoots

and we have found lava and I'm wondering how you're going to utilize it Splint.

I can hardly wait to see what becomes of this project.

In all honesty it's going better than expected. All we got for disease were a few people with blindness, some long-dead schizophrenics, and a Nobgost with liver cancer. I was fully expecting flu epidemics to grind work to a halt and cripple the army regularly or black death, bubonic plague, meningitis or some other horrible disease to kill people in droves.

Granted we did have a close call witht he flu not spreading from the depot once, and we do have a live-in necromancer pretty much in the form of Bim the Hunter, but he's seen the error of his ways thanks to the power of our gods (most likely Rulush, since I'm operating within the constraints of the civ's pantheon rather than Armok being the only thing the dwares worship.)

A little bump for a smidge of news, all dorfings are up to date!

Gex Senelgingim, Strange Miner (female miner, all our miners are female oddly enough.)
Draeath Unibsharsid, Cavern Speardwarf (male Speardwarf, former fish farmer)
Xanatosxan Ishlulor, Eccentric Sorcerer (male arcane dwarf, pending school of magic selection)

And Dailm Bottledrasped, The Lamented Muscles of Sporting's Kill List
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An update should be made in the next day or two; Skyrim is eating my computer time like a crackhead in a crack factory.

Sorry, I am back, between the 4th, computer issues, and a birthday I was a bit distracted.

Here is just a little something to space out the downtime.

Seriously though, it would be pretty sweet to have some "magical" type reactions in the school of faith, based on the prayer ability. While the humans do have Paladins in name and I don't know what is planned for the playable humans, it would be interesting to flesh out the faith based industry with their own branch of schools. Paladins, crusaders, D&D style clerics, healers, etc.

Community contributions updated! Sorry for the lack of updates guys, Skyrim and now v.40 being released are quite literally devouring my time right now. Worldgen forts are... Kinda confusing. But no less than a typical dungeon and they're eerie as all hell to me.

And I do agree, something for faith would be nice beyond the good magic units. A unit of proper Paladin-types who can weaken evil creatures with the might of their gods and some kind of combat bonuses for when they close the gap (because as we all know, evil vanquishwers prefer to beat thier foes over the head with blunt and/or sharp things,) would be nice.

Skyrim is always an acceptable excuse - especially if you promise you have things like Frostfall installed!

How's .40 feeling? I'm holding off for at least a few bugfix releases. I'm hardly skilled or knowledgeable to determine what's a bug or my own incompetence, so my own testing wouldn't be very valuable.

Honestly? I'm enjoying it aside from personality now mattering for military recruits. I reclaimed a worldgen fort for my first thing and they're pretty convoluted and confusing in layout, but you have a chance of moving into what may as well have been a factory with all the abandoned smelters and forges.

Main gripe is that apparently dwarves by and large are massive cowards (more-so than I would have expected,) and many with personalities that favor conflict also dislike physical confrontation or don't value fighting ability, which will probably force those of us who rely on the military to get shit done to use traps more, which I honestly am not okay with. I prefer to give the enemy a sound thrashing in a quick and messy fashion, not wait around for them to blunder into a death hall or a mess of cage traps. Especially since I don't know what exactly will raise the discipline skill (which arena testing indicates influences weather or not a unit flees or fights.) My guess is killing shit, but so far all I have for wildlife are owls.

Oh my. Based on my own Masterwork fort's cavern 2 outpost, choosing a spear may have been unwise. Then again, it's not that the speardwarves can't kill the antmen, it's that they get mobbed and die before they become nigh-invulnerable legends. Those 6-limbed bastards come with full ambush parties, 2-3 of them at the same time. That's 20-30 of rusted steel swords and thrice as many shields jumping the brave fool who rushes in.

Hence the gate and posting a dragon near the stairs. If things go horribly wrong, we can cut off thier reinforcements and fry the rest.

Oh, and please don't rune-engrave my spear, or anyone else's for that matter, with orichalcum. 5% chance of instakill is good, 5% chance of turning the enemy into a flaming creature is a bit more hazardous. It's a wonder it hasn't yet lit the cavern moss on fire.

The first cavern is devoid of moss entirely, and would have been regardless; sometimes moss fails to spawn properly in the caverns leaving only mud, and that was cleared when I cleaned the map to get rid of the mud in the hospital. As far as rune engraving, I both lack a rune station and we can't afford to use orichalcum for it anyway.

EDIT: Once again dealt a crippling blow, and I suspect my tower is part of the problem. I cannot work on Riverrun for the foreseeable future (or Carryscar either, due to the sheer  volume of shit on that one and this e-machine being nowhere near able to cope with that,) as this shit needs to get dealt with.

25th Galena, 143

One of The Darkness named their Kris, which makes for the second on out of that group. And one of the Nobgosts got himself a new name. Showed up for induction into the militia (anyone who calls us an army clearly hasn't looked at 90% our equipment,) and to get his mail and training armor and I told the first I saw “You need a new name, go.” He asked what I meant and I repeated myself, and then he stammered something that sounded like 'Draeath' so I told him that's his new name for future reference.

Honestly I've started calling anyone I don't know Nobgost. That's not weird, right journal?

...Nah, course it isn't.

28th Galena, 143

Evidently Count Rakust wants some “Specialist” plots made in the courtyard. Saw some dwarves ripping up dead bushes, saplings, that sort of thing, asked about it, and apparently we're expected to grow that ironwood and steeloak shit to make furniture for export out of.

Isn't all bad, I guess. I mean yeah I have to live with seeing more fucking mini-trees in parts of my fortress courtyard, but at least it's for a good cause, and the elves can't say dick because we didn't technically cut them down. We just kind grow them and then  just kinda push them over before the roots can really get a solid hold on anything.

Good practice for shield-charging drills and nobody even complains!

2nd Limestone, 143

Heard down the grapevine Arcvasti's working on perfecting that herbalism lab. Damned things are always a pain in the ass to work with I hear, but he seems rather intent on opening the last two schools of magic. Now, I'm all for having one of those clerics roaming around, keeping everyone healthy and whatnot, but that black magic? That's some fuckin' warlock shit he's dealing with. I'm gonna ask Rakust about assigning him a 'bodyguard' from the Fortress Guard to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid.

5th Limestone, 143

Humans are gonna be packing up to leave soon, and I gotta say I'm amazed! We didn't get, y'know, shot at. chewed on, or otherwise had our lives threatened!

In Militia news dear journal, I really need to tell Psi to quit working the furnaces. We need those swords and helmets and she's our best smith, never mind the fact that Tirion's dwarves still need weapons. I've also got one of the fortress guard shadowing Arcvasti as an assistant. These other eggheads aren't good for much anyway, may as well grab one and put him to use. Speaking of which I really need to find a suitable replacement for Mr Frog. His squad's been more or less running around like a cavernkeet with its head cut off without a sergeant that knows what he or she's doing.

Guess I need to go poking around “below deck” as those north sea traders say, and find a good replacement.

Also found out Rakust is planning on establishing an embassy outside the walls, next door to Teduk's. Smart dwarf.

-

Gave the go-ahead for the civvies to go and pick over that wrecked bandit camp near the east road (which is thankfully almost finished now,) see if there's anything they like. And to clean up the bones while they're at it.

I don't wanna go tripping over some dead guy's skull if I have to go over there to kill shit again.

13th Limestone, 143

Khaziraad finished his earth magic training and is already gathering materials to continue on. He's also asking around for platinum to make a statue, saying he'll need one to master that particular school of magic.

Speaking of magic, Tenderroast has been badgering anyone who'll listen about making ink and paper and other assorted crap so someone can write up the shit for his induction into the school of wizardry and then the school of fire; the crucible was able to melt down a ton of sandstone into something that vaguely resembles obsidian which I'm told his close enough for induction.

Also talk of a proper temple to the gods being constructed and resources permitting, being staffed by dwarves. Oh, and get this journal, Nidor's married! Has been since he got here, and nobody found out until someone proposed to his wife. Mainly a marriage of convenience or so they say. Didn't wanna die without a spouse in case things went.... Damn, what’s that orc saying... In case things went pear-shaped I think it was.

Same goes for Mr Frog; We thought his spirit was somehow violating the laws of being buried and slabbed when someone's shoes went missing (only to be found dangling from the gatehouse last night,) and Vukrig woke up with his face painted purple last week! Turns out the little shit and he were kindred spirits or something and she'd gotten into trouble in Mirroredaxes for drawing plump helmets all over some noble's paintings one time too many, hence their move to Riverrun and all it's splendor as a lovely pile of giant badger infested splinters, glass, and dirt.

22nd Limestone, 143

Things are going pretty easy; Khaziraad just started the next leg of his trasgingbnfhjfnkj fsc, m

-

Okay, so...

Yeah, we don't need to worry about Arcvasti killing anyone with zombies now. A damned cave croc slipped in and tore his ass to shreds, along with a craftsdwarf named Ingtak.

The beast is now called Goldclean in hushed tones, and there's fear of the cave crocs spreading like wildfire through the populous. We really need to finish that gods damned barracks down there, because I don't want people thinking I don't care about their safety. Even if I... Really sort of don't, considering I didn't really shed a tear over Arcvasti's and Ingtak's deaths.

Fenglel is even taking the death surprisingly well considering Arcvasti was her husband. Why journal? Already got two kids out of him before he croaked and that was good enough for her; family goes on. Dailm scored the payback kill, cutting Goldclean in half while it was fighting with our small army of cragtooths

Oh, and there was that one guy who's working on a silk wife-beater or some shit.

24th Limestone, 143

Alright, so it wasn't a wife-beater. Me and Deadeye (he bet it'd be pants,) owe Nidor 10 shillings each (he bet us it wouldn't be either one instead of something else; clever dorf that one.)

8th Sandstone, 143

Construction is painfully slow on the outpost, and worry about 'hivers' means Count Rakust wants me to find more recruits to man the caverns. Since The Paints have experience down there I may just reloacate them to the caverns with The Fell Buckets.

Oh, and a kobold made a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge mistake late today. Poor thing didn't see that spray of acid coming...

16th Sandstone, 143

Deadeye Dumed the researcher. Who'd a guessed? He found some of Arcvasti's old lab designs when Fenglel was selling off his old research notes (written on everything from paper and velum to six pairs of old socks, two shirts, a pair of pants, a once-missing buckler, and what appears to be... Well, apparently he figured out a way to press his hairy arms onto some paper to copy stuff he'd written there too. So... Pressings I guess?

28th Sandstone, 143

Was talking to Cerol tonight at dinner and found out two things. First, she killed two giant moles. Two, Julius just got his own fancy little ivory shop! The cragtooths are finally being put to use.

8th Timber, 143

There's been a sighting of frog men in the caverns, and I could think of no better way to give Tirion's dwarves a test of courage than to pit them against some inevitably unruly tribals! We also apparently have a giant mole and a troll in captivity... Not uh... Not sure what to make of that. Dunno who even ordered the cage traps installed. Maybe Rakust?

Also, there's been some odd reports of items going missing. Not stolen, because our bookkeeper would know if they'd been stolen, but... Moved somewhere else in Riverrun Territory. Some are blaming the smurfs, and I'm one of them. The little freaks have to be planing something.

11th Timber, 143

The Paints have officially been issued their new swords and helmets! Hopefully the next leader (if anyone will fucking step up,) won't die like Mr Frog did now.

15th Timber, 143

Caravan's here! And they remembered their wagons! Asshats complained about the road being bumpy but Rakust shut them up by pointing out there's still two engagements of roadway to the east that are unfinished. Even warmed my heart a little when he said they should be grateful they can do business with the fortress!

Nidor looked a little nervous while he was out with the others perusing the caravan's goodies. Saw him point to a golem they'd set up with a sign draped around it's neck that said 15020. For something made of brass and not powered by a dwarf soul, that shit is extortionate. I mean really. We could probably buy a few dozen steel bars for that.

20th Timber, 143

Some of the caravan guards aren't looking so hot. Pale, bloodshot eyes, fever... Has something awful written all over them. Told Emtan so and she agreed, and passed word onto Rakust. Now an official order is coming up for everyone to gather the purchased booze and what little other items we got and stay as far away from the caravan as possible.

The liaison also looked very concerned when we directed him to the 'mayor' that is our one smurf that managed to kill anything bigger than a rat. I don't blame him.

21st Timber, 143

Ruckus across the river, and we got us some happy little greenskins!

They're dead now though.

Set the Caverns on watch near the river crossing and all they reported was two dead snatchers and a thief they killed after the raiding party. My unit poked around the country side a bit and turned up squat. Man, you'd think a fortress so isolated would garner more attention from things like the goblins or orcs? I wanna kill things like I was hired to damn it.

23rd Timber, 143

Amost the hunter is looking unwell. Emtan ordered him to be isolated until she can sift through her piles of old medical texts to see what exactly is afflicting him and the others in the caravan. As a precaution, Rakust ordered all items to be left in the depot until further notice. Even sent the Fortress Guard to grab him and shove him in a new isolation cell (I dunno why they called it a cell, it looked more like a cubby hole slightly larger than two dwarves with a shoddy cot inside.)

People of Bay 12, I AM BACK. Okay, so after a hellaciously long and unannounced hiatus from lovely little Riverrun, I have returned. Blame the new release and Skyrim, with some minor equipment failures thrown in.

So, where to begin. Arcvasti's dead for starters. As is another unclaimed dwarf. There's a possible disease outbreak in the making courtesy of our friends from The Joyous Steel Company thanks to their lack of cleanliness standards I'm sure, and dun dun dun... Someone may be planning to summon Arcvasti from the dead or something similar with the... Borrowed we'll say herbalist designs.

Had a minor goblin slaughter, the cragtooths are finally being put to service as ivory factories to keep good ol' Julius inbusiness for a few weeks at least, and the cavern barracks is almost complete! Also had a named weapon and a silk rope of awesome quality.

All in all, short, sweet, and with dead people and a drawing of a goblin head on a spike. Or possibly Urist's tappin' stick. Dealer's choice on that one. Hope you guys enjoy!

From the diary of Vexxy the Crocodile, hunter:

"It's clear now. Mr Frog must not be forgotten.

I'm asking Splint to make me a squad commander of The Paints.

I shall pick up my brothers shield, and stand true against the dangers we may face down in the caverns.

And yeah, I also found a can of magenta paint under Froggie's bed... It would be such a waste to throw it away. Let's see if the count likes his bedroom painted that way..."
