Move four north, two east. Vow to buy a ranged weapon next chance I get. Loot shortbow and arrows off of dead grunts as I pass by and fire one at the nearest attacker.

The dead crewmen around you aren't using their shortbows, and you were trained to use one in Lord Physic's service.  If you're in the mood for a bit of looting the bodies of your erstwhile companions.

Varg drops his sword onto the deck (or if its a part of the action of pulling out my shortbow, do so) and pulls out his shortbow and fires an arrow at the enemy captain (using smite good if he can)! Also shout at the captain and the woman to get them to surrender! Make it sound threatening so the witch and their captain will try to go for me instead of the wounded! Also, try to use the ballista as a shield from any attacks!

If you all surrender quietly, I'll make sure that Aegir is pleased with the dead that are fed to the sea already! If you don't, then even if you surrender or not, I'll make certain that Aegir will be pleased with many more offerings of thanks for our victory...

Varg faces the woman after he fires his arrow

I met your kinsman once, witch. Do you wish to die here in the ocean, far from your home? Away from your loved ones? If you fight us longer, I will make sure you never reach Valhalla's gates... And your kin will never know of your fate.

[Caerill:17, d8=6] You fire an arrow at the woman in the green dress.  One strikes her hard in the arm and she staggers back from the blow.  Galan blasts her in the gut [2] and she's knocked to the deck.  [Varg: 8+1+1+1(smite), 18 intimidate]  Varg's shot misses the enemy captain, but his words strike true.  The captain draws his focus to Varg, while the last enemy soldier hesitates.  [Mila: 8+4, 8] Mila takes advantage of the situation to shoot him in the eye, knocking him backward with the force.  Only a single crewman remains, unconscious from the initial exchange.

Captain Reach hustles the rest of the way to the enemy captain and attacks with his sabre, [14+7+1, 4+3 damage] running him through the leg.  The enemy captain sinks to the ground, and Greene hurls another javelin [15+4, 1+3] striking him in the other leg.  The captain passes out from blood loss.

Suddenly finding herself extremely alone, the woman draws a tiny stick from her dress, the length of it covered in golden markings.  She snaps it, and is suddenly wreathed in smoke.  She stands, and then spreads her arms - which very soon become wings.  The creature sweeps away, an emerald-skinned lizard with two broad wings, two sharp-clawed legs, a crested, scaly head and a long barbed tail.  As she departs, she makes a pass at Captain Reach, [4+10, 3] stabbing him in the throat.  The beast then flies up into the sky in its escape.

Captain Reach [12+4] shudders involuntarily at the creature's attack, but seems not significantly worse for wear.

What will you do?

Apologies everyone.  It's been a busy few weeks.  I finished drama school, moved city, got an agent, got my Grade 8 singing certificate (distinction!) and entered a short distance relationship with my girlfriend all at once.  And I started on this project.  It's been a bit mad.

In the interests of sanity, I'm going to abstract battle sequences a little more.  I'll tell you if you're out of moving distance from critical people and such, but otherwise we're going to do away with precise positioning because it's a pain and gets in the way of things.

Check on Captain Reach. Check his wound for poisons. If he dies, I don't get paid!

Check on Captain Reach. Check his wound for poisons. If he dies, I don't get paid!

[Heal: 2+2] You don't think the wound is poisoned, or if it is the poison is gone.  Captain Reach has you help him drag the enemy captain over to your ship and tie him up, [8+4, 10! Con damage] and just as you finish dragging the captain over, Reach begins convulsing violently.  You try to help him, but it's too late.  His eyes roll backwards and froth comes from his mouth.  He shudders violently a few times, and then lies still.

Reach is no more.

Galan, overwhelmed by what has happened you go straight back to your bunk and try to sleep this all off.

The Shallow Hope is severely damaged, and even after putting out the fires, so is the Retribution.  You have enough materials to repair one ship but due to crew losses during the fight, even after press-ganging the one surviving crewman of the Retribution, you barely have enough of a skeleton crew to man either ship.

Plundering the Retribution's stores, you recover some additional ammunition and supplies, as well as the captain's lockbox, which upon breaking yields 800 silver shillings and 100 gold ducats.  There is also a sealed letter bearing a distinctive crest; a party per pall shield bearing the marks of a golden wheel on a blue background, a silver lion and a green serpent curled around a sprig of nightshade.  [Knowledge: Nobility - 16+3] Mila, you are able to correctly identify this as the crest of House Richards, a minor house of Galam whose star has recently been on the ascendant.

Raiding a separate private chamber, suspected to belong to the woman in green based on the feminine changes of clothing found there, you find a purse of 50 silver shillings, a small glass ampoule containing what appears to be pitch-black ink, a small phial of thick, crimson liquid, a pouch of what appears to be snuff, and six small glass tubes, three marked with an orange band and three with a green band.  Also recovered is an empty glass bell jar, sealed with a wooden base inscribed with unknown glyphs.

Finally, the ship's armoury contains another lockbox with what you came looking for: a dozen small bottles of amber liquid in a case marked 'healing'.  There comes with it also a slender wooden wand with a golden tip.

But now you have other issues, and without a captain it's coming to a vote.  You can vote, but you can also try and sway the other crewmen with threats or persuasion.  First up, who will be the new captain?  Greene is throwing his hat in the ring, and the other crewmen seem unwilling to do so.  Second, which ship should be repaired and taken?  Third, where should we go from here?  Fourth, what should be done with the enemy captain?

The choices are up to you.

Varg votes for Greene as captain; if the bastard can take a ballista bolt and still hold strong, he's tough enough. He was reach's right hand man, so he would know the ins and outs of maneuvering the ship more then anyone.

Say a few prayers to Reach and our other fallen crewmen; lucky bastard is going to The Golden Hall. Recommend that we interrogate the enemy captain to reveal to us places of interest before we toss him overboard as an offering of thanks for a KIND OF successful raid and that some of us still live... And hope it stops the rain.

After that, try and patch up the place and make sure I don't stop until the job is done to the best of my ability (take 20). But before I do that, grab the bastard that screwed up the patchwork on the lower decks by his collar.

You pull a stunt like that again, and I'll run by foot so far up your arse that you'll see blood in your chamberpot for the next year. Are you going to pull another half ass job or are you going to make sure we don't all die because you didn't want to do something?

Galan nominates himself for captain, but votes for Greene as well. He votes for taking whatever ship is in better condition. He votes for throwing the enemy captain.

Afterward, being the resident sorcerer, he grabs the wand we found on the other ship and screws around with it to see what it does.

Indeed. Galan, you are presently being held by your collar about half a foot in the air by Varg.  He looks pissed.
