Ask questions about the xenos we're facing. Ask about where he feels we should start our investigation. Ask why he hasn't been keeping up with the world below. Ask about what support he will be giving us.

"If you would be so inclined to explain why it is you haven't been, as you seem to put it, keeping up with information from the world below for nigh on a decade now if you had beforehand?"

As you ask the question the man's face turns from a smile to a slight frown, your years as an interrogator allowing you to notice the tinge of sadness about his expression and the look of weariness in his eyes. Clearing his throat the man replies,

"I've been commander of this station for fifty-five years now, and my father was commander of it before me, and his father commander of it before him and yet in my family's long service over this planet we've always found the surface below more than friendly to our cause. When at times supplies on the station ran low, or we were short men to resupply a Navy vessel we've looked to the cities of Marasen to provide able-bodied men, food, or even metals and tools to repair ships. However a little over ten years ago the rumors of xeno sightings in the polar regions of Marasen began to spread along with tales of once loyal servants of the Imperium who now aided them offering shelter or aid to support them.

It wasn't long after that the groups of armsmen I sent down to bring me the latest news, gossip, and rumors of the planet began to return bearing nothing of import, with information that contradicted itself, or .... or they never returned at all. I now dread sending my men down to the surface with the fear that they may never return at all, the first time I grew tired and angry at these disappearances I sent down fifty men with orders to find the perpetrators and bring me there heads. Not a single one returned.

Now I send my men only to Navy compounds on the surface, and order those stationed in those same compounds to lock them down to keep contact with the outside minimal for those strongholds are few enough as is. Something is afoot I know, some xenos taint has began to worm its way onto my homeworld and yet all I can do is hide on my station, and behind my garrison walls lest I march all my men to their death leaving no one to hold out in a dire emergency.

You probably think I'm a coward, feth I'm almost obliged to agree with you on that part, but I can't willingly send my men to their death knowing it might doom an entire world of billions to their death ..."

You contemplate what Helk said as you think of what more you must ask of him, after what seems like an hour of silence with you deep in thought you finally manage to speak up.

"Do you know anything of this xenos taint? Perhaps where I might be able to start my investigation? Aside from that I need to know if you've noticed any officials acting oddly, and ... and I need to know what support you can give me for my operation."

The man nods slightly before pulling opening a small box on his desk, a container of lho sticks1 and a lighter in it, taking one he lights it up and takes a long drag from the smoldering narcotic.

"To be fully honest I have no fething clue what this taint might even be, the only real information I have about them is ten years old, and that was simply that they were supposedly in some towns in the polar regions. They've probably long since spread to the rest. As for where to start I'd recommend you start your investigations in Marasen's planetary capital, Wallden which aspires to be a hive though its still got many decades by my estimations before it reaches that point. The only other place I'd suggest is Custen in the southern arctic regions, one of the places these xenos were supposedly, and both of these locations have a Navy base in them so you'll have capable bases if need be not to mention forces to barge in and save you should things go south.

On the topic of support, the Navy garrisons and their forces are at your disposal along with two dozen of my best armsmen on board this station and assisting aerial transports. That's about as much as I can offer you since the rest will be needed should any enemy fleet elements appear in orbit around this planet, I'll need every man I can get then to throw them back, even if that isn't likely one has to always be prepared..."

1: A Lho stick is a fairly common narcotic that is rather popular in PDF, and Imperial Guard regiments as a type of relaxation method. Only really outlawed in certain systems and planets which are far, and few between.

"Then I will start my investigations in the capital, keep a close watch of those around you Rear Admiral for if the xeno taint has spread so deep in the world below it might have infested your station as well."

Helk nods at your words, and signals to his aide to help you find your way back to the Crimson Son, he gives the aid instructions to give your landing vessels clearance codes for landing in all Navy garrisons, and to arrange for the support he offered you to be readied. As you leave you see Helk lighting another lho stick as he begins to riffle through the reports on his desk, a good man from the looks of it in a position with a lot of troubles to carry upon his own shoulders without you pressing upon him yourself as well.

The trip back to the Crimson Son is quick, and uneventful, only broken by your vox communications with Rodrick to prepare a landing craft with an escort and to inform Eomann that they will be leaving shortly. By the time you arrive you're met by four of Rodrick's armsmen, grizzled men more accustomed to combat on board ships than on the ground they have las-carbines slung over their shoulder and most of their body is covered in worn, and scarred black armor plating. The men salute to you, and fall in around you as you stroll into the ship proper picking up Eomann himself as you pass through the ready room heading to the launch bays along the spine of the ship where your landing craft, an old converted supply ship, awaits.

It's not long before you, and your escort clamber aboard the aging unmarked vessel and not long after that before the engines roar to life and the lander makes its way of the Crimson Son's launch bay. Its at this time that the lander's captain voxs back to you asking whether you want to land at the Imperial Navy garrison in Wallden, go to the public docks and rent a spot their where eyes are all about, or go to the more private docks in the upper spire where the price of renting a bay is higher but your secrecy is almost guaranteed. Which do you choose?

You command the pilot to take you to the Navy garrison, and he immediately sets course for it as you make your way back to your seat in the rear compartment of the transport where the armsmen sit talking among themselves with Eomann performing maintenance on his bolter off to the side. Nodding to him you take a seat beside the Space Marine as he reassembles the last bits of his weapon restoring it to working condition, turning his helmeted head towards you he speaks up.

"What are your orders for when we arrive at the station Inquisitor?"

"When we touch down the armsmen will stick with me as my escort, and you are to go to the garrison's armory where I want you to inspect their entire stock for any trace of xenos taint in the technology. You're to keep your purpose their a secret from all of them, and then to report to me with your findings once you're done, I'll probably still be with the commanding officer at that point."

You reply as you roll your rosette over in your fingers, such a small object it was yet the power it gives you is immense beyond measure, if needed it even gave you the right to condemn this planet to its death to contain the xenos taint. You just hope it doesn't come to that ...

-Later-

Your arrival at the garrison is heralded by sudden roar of the engines, and that unique pull caused by g-forces as the lander suddenly pushes upward to slow its descent and end in a successful landing. As the lander slams down on the landing pad the bay doors open up to reveal a breathtaking landscape, out past the dull grey of the landing pad the sky is a dull blue with clouds passing by far beneath where you stand and the sun stands at its peak in the sky above. The city sprawls out to the north as the spire you are on is on the southern face, it is a massive sprawling thing covering tens of thousand of kilometers of land, and even hanging out over the ocean that surrounds the entire thing though the far side of the city seems to meld with the ocean on the horizon.

You turn your attention to the landing pad proper as you here Eomann ask someone the location of the armory, by the time you find him he's already heading off towards an elevator as a group of people you assume to be high ranking garrison officers stare in awe at the Marine. Smirking you step forward off the ramp as your armsmen spread out scanning the area for any threat, you clear your throat to get the attention of the officers who spin around startled at the sudden noise. It takes only a few moments of the sight of your rosette to bring some composure to the group of Navy officers, one of them steps forward and bows, a grizzled old man bearing dozens of scars and with a gait that leads you to believe at least one of his legs is injured.

"Welcome to Waystation Zeta-24C-Gamma Inquisitor, you can call this place Waystation 24C if it pleases you, I am Senior Armsmen Astin Proriol the acting commander of this station. I've received word from Rear Admiral Helk that I am to assist you in anyway I can, simply ask what you will of me and I shall strive to fulfill your wish."

"Right now all I wish to know is anything you can tell be about this xenos taint worming its way onto this world."

The man makes a slight sigh before replying,

"Sadly all I know is probably what the Rear Admiral told you, I am aware of the reported sightings of them in the polar regions, but I have no really useful details outside of that. Even if I had the men to try, and send out to obtain some news about them right now the hive is on the verge of martial law, the fething gangs are warring in the streets and it seems a week can't go by without more victims falling to this supposed Slicer serial killer that the Arbites are trying to hunt down."

The man pauses awaiting your reply ...

List of queries:
> 'Feth'? Seems like an expressive term but it also seems like a noun.
> What exactly is the symbolism of the Rosette and what does it mean?
> Do we know what exact type of Xenos is plaguing the planet? Do we know if its sentient--and if so, may be able to infiltrate the civilizations and/or subvert them to their cause?
> Martial law and disorder is primarily caused by that supposed serial killer right? What's a Slicer? Or is that a notorious name for it (and most likely how it treats its victims)?

stabbymcstabstab was rather helpful, but I'll go ahead and expand on a few things for clarity's sake.

2.) The Rosette symbolizes Inquisitorial Remit, and either one's station as an Inquisitor or one's station as a follower of an Inquisitor in some few rare cases. Essentially it is the symbol by which your right to the Inquisitorial Remit is shown signifying that you have absolute power in all cases, and that the only one who can command you is the God-Emperor himself enthroned in the Golden Throne. Of course this doesn't protect you from the ire of other Inquisitors who might disagree with your practices, of those who think themselves outside of Imperial Law, and the like. While Inquisitors have absolute power most tend to act in secrecy due the nature of what the fight be it Chaos, Eldar, Orks, or some other xenos or heretic filth.
3.) You have absolutely no clue who the xenos race is you're facing on the planet, you were sent here to find that out, but they are most definitely sentient as they would need to be to get to this planet from another as it was until recently a purely human colony. The previous alien civilization was destroyed via Exterminatus and the planet reshaped for human use. As for subverting the xenos to your side you could certainly do that, but most people would view that as heresy as one of the tenents of the state religion of the Imperium is 'To purge the heretic, beware the psyker and mutant, and abhor the alien.'. Utilizing xenos would likely make you a radical, and would most definitely piss of your faithful ally Eomann as his purpose is to hunt and kill aliens.
4.) Slicer is the name people have given the serial killer.
