Wild, hostile animal creature.  Goblin will be programmed to flee, not fight, where a wild animal will likely fight, especially if it has loves_fighting tag. Something like a crundle maybe?

Thanks for the tip. I have a bunch of tame crundles as my egg farm at the moment...don't think they'd do it. But I can catch a troglodyte, crundle, or giant toad when they come along, they're pretty common. Up above, there's also quite a few mosquito men running around, and they seem to fight by default.

Or place the GCS in a fortification pillar and have it web then enemies when they get within aggro range. Which is like 16 tiles IIRC.

I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

That was my first thought, but I'm worried that then the spitting FB might spit on and kill my GCS. I only have one, so I need to make it last until I can catch more. Better to web the cages first, then get spidey clear.

Then add bridges and use prisoners in cages on levers.

GCS are a bad web thrower. If you're getting FBs really well look for a web shooting one. They shoot out a lot more webs and normally miss alot. Plus most are fairly more robust than normal GCS. Unfortunately if you use that entrance for actuall dwarf movement it's a problem because it assaults the dwarfs.

It's like I said, dood...
My only prisoners are goblin thieves, and the GCS isn't interested in webbing them. I'm working on that part; I'll have a bad guy ready to be webbed soon enough.

Ha! You know, I think I might have the perfect thing for that. I have this one FB, a quadruped made of some gem or another. I trapped it in a spike trap, been hitting it with the spikes for months. It has a broken spine and no legs, but it's a webslinger, and it can still move very slowly. Plus, the main problem is, my spikes (glass) aren't strong enough to kill it. With all that working in its favour, it should make the perfect FB web shooter. I can't believe I didn't think of it, thanks for the tip!

Just one problem though: web shooting FBs are immune to webs. How am I supposed to catch the thing in a webbed cage if it'll walk over it just the same?

lure it onto a platform surrounded by a deep pit, accessible via a raising bridge, using a delicious kitten on a chain.

Something like this:

O=========O
|. . . . . . . . .|
|. + + + + + .O
|. + + c + + . B <-- Raising bridge. BRIDGE RAISES TO THE RIGHT! Must seal the wall and remove the path when raised!
|. + + + + + .O
|. . . . . . . . .|
O=========O

Once the delicious kitten has attracted the FB, raise the bridge, removing the path to the platform, and hiding the FB. At this time, build some additional walls, and a protective fortification slit, followed by another raising bridge.

O=========O
|. . . . . . . . .|
|. + + + + + .O=O <-- Added walls
|. + + F + + . BFB  <-- Fortification, followed by new raising bridge. This bridge raises to the left, creating a wall when raised.
|. + + + + + .O=O <-- Added walls
|. . . . . . . . .|
O=========O

Once those are in, drop the bridge leading to the platform.

O=========O
|. . . . . . . . .|
|. + + + + + .O=O
|. + + F + + + +FB  <-- Peepshow bridge is still up, but FB can path to the fortification slit as needed!
|. + + + + + .O=O
|. . . . . . . . .|
O=========O

How to use this, I leave as an exercise for the user.

You are a clever bastard, you know that?

I assume if I didn't want to build this where the FB happened to be then it would be a simple matter to just securely lure it in the same way to where I did want it to be using a breadcrumb trail of kittens? The final lure could lead into the trap you so cleverly devised.

I can't take credit. Others much more clever than I devised this approach, and have even made improved versions.  This is usually the beginning of an FB silkfarm, since a kitten can be chained in LoS of the peepshow bridge, and the FB will happilly spew enormous amounts of webs at it. Just close the bridge, then send in the silk farmers.  Rinse, repeat.

IIRC, the first FB silk farm was made shortly after the release immediately following .40d...

Interesting fact:  If you do this with webber demons, the silk has AMAZING properties! For instance, being fire proof, and magma proof.

Are you serious? That's pretty impressive. Then again, when would that come in useful? I can't ever recall a situation when I've thought: "Damn. If only Urist was wearing his magma and fireproof +Demon Silk Hood+, then this would all come together!"

What weak point? And which "it"?

Layered clothing that is fireproof underneath armor can help dwarves resist fire attacks, such a flamer demons and fire imps. Not sure if effective against dragons--

IIRC, it also DOES improve the time that the magma diving expeditionary force can survive while exploring the magma sea.

Edit:

He's probably referring to the FB's weakpoint, behind the fortification slit.  A wandering marksdwarf wandering past will attempt to shoot at the FB through the slit, which can hit for massive damage.

Cage trapped beasts don't spread contaminants unless the cage gets covered before it's captured.

Nope. Gaseous noxious secretions are one of the few attacks that continue even if the beast is caged. Targetted attacks (spitting, etc.) do not. Due to their gaseous nature, I don't think they leave contaminants at normal temperatures, but anyone who gets too close to the cage will still feel the effects.

Getting the cage into position may require considerable (and expendable) dwarfpower, but watching your visitors march past and collapse dead is rather nice. I recommend digging a new entrance under the cage, then tossing it down a hole to minimize dwarf exposure to the toxins. I dropped one into a fortification with raising bridges around it, but that particular syndrome usually only incapacitates passersby, leaving my military to mop up.

Hrm. Well, I'm nowhere near taking down the HFS yet anyway. Still, good to know.

Oh, I hit SMR a long time ago.

Ah. Noted. But then again, if the thing's made of solid gems and the spikes didn't do a thing, how much can it possibly do?

Nope. Gaseous noxious secretions are one of the few attacks that continue even if the beast is caged.
Ooof. Thanks for the tip, I almost shot myself in the foot with that one.

Honestly, seeing as I have a spitting FB to play with as it is, it seems much easier just to use that. In fact, if I use the spitting one in conjunction with the webbing one, I'd have a fantastic little web n' wash, as it were, to put upon anything dumb enough to try and invade.

Oooh I feel clever now.
