Caught a forgotten beast...
« on: May 23, 2014, 08:01:51 am »

What should I do with it? I trapped it behind a drawbridge, lined the bridge with cage traps, and then pastured my tame GCS in front of the traps. Opened the gate, spidey webbed the thing, and it got stuck in a cage, nice and easy.

"A gigantic three-eyed crab. It has a pair of squat antennae and it has a gaunt appearance. Its scarlet exoskeleton is waxy. Beware its poisonous bite!"

Pretty pedestrian by FB standards, at least compared to some of the other ones I've come up against. I just don't happen to have any ideas for its use.

Well rather unimpressive one it is.  I'd feed it to my soldiers.
Or you could sell it to the elves to humiliate it even more.
Or if you're in the mood for creating fb collection, this one would do as first specimen.

If throw it into a drowning pit and harvest the meat and bones for high value crafts.

Pretty sure FB's can't drown, nevermind one that's an amphibious animal anyway. Besides, forgotten beasties have body part values of one all around. I may as well make crafts out of all the black bear cubs I have.

The elves never make it to my Depot in time anymore, they always fall to sieges. I imagine they'll start picking a fight with me soon anyway. And what is the purpose of a fb collection? They don't seem too useful, although I suppose it's a cool idea. Might well just let my fighters kill it in the arena.

By the way, does anyone happen to know how cages handle fb's with noxious secretions? I've got this one hanging out at my border edge, and I have the means to capture it, but there's no sense in catching it if it's just going to kill anyone who hauls the cage: I have no idea how or why, but anything that spawns in next to the FB dies pretty quick, but with no visible damage when looked at. I could potentially engineer the thing into quite the siege-killer with the right setup.

Cage trapped beasts don't spread contaminants unless the cage gets covered before it's captured. Gloves go a long way to help mitigate this.

Also I wasn't talking dwarf bucks value, but epic ness factor. What symptoms does it have? Perhaps it's useful as a bolt poisoner?

Thanks for the tip! I'll go snatch the thing then.

Symptoms? No idea. It's already killed a troll, a whole herd of Draltha and another FB just by walking next to them though. They get the flashing green x that dwarves get when their guts get caught, but there's never any vomit lying around. I'll catch the thing later, and post back here to let you know.

How do you go about poisoning bolts? Also, can you poison other weapons like spears? I've never heard of that done before.

The meaty FBs with no webs or fire are basically just for cooking and making soap.  The stoney ones are useful for archery practice.

Anything with a dust, poison, blood ect can land in your arrow stockpile and poison them. Make outs of gauntlets and gloves though.

Hrm...
Perhaps you could do this:

B-|=a

Where B is the beast, - is a gap, | is a raised drawbridge, = is a retracting drawbridge (where you put the bolts).
You drop  the bolts in from above, then lower the drawbridge. The beast proceeds to spew syndrome everywhere (since it spews syndrome everywhere regardless). Then, you pull the floor out to collect the bolts.
Only problem is that this might break the bolt stack. And if the noxious secretion isn't some form of dust (say it's a gas) then this is pointless.
Alternatively, you could just make a bunker by the entrance. The beast will spew is secretions regardless, so you could lower a bridge (in front of fortifications) to poison entire sieges as they path through. A different, civilian entrance might be desireable though if the syndrome spreads...

What's the best way to tell? I have a suspicion of gas.

This was my initial plan. Might as well put the thing to good use doing what it does best: killing stuff.

Look for residue on objects/tiles. Gases typically won't leave these, but other things (e.g. dust) will.

No residue for me. Guess that one's just a common or garden gas spewer then. But no matter! Another FB has wandered onto my map.

"A huge hairy hadrosaurid. It has a pair of spindly antennae and it has a bloated body. Beware its deadly spittle!"

Sounds like this one has much more poisoning potential.

Spitters are difficult, they require something to aim at. So you'll need something (read:useless cats) standing ontop of the bolts.

This is also useful to find the symptoms of the effect.

No worries, I have a seemingly endless supply of bear cubs to kill. Also, what is a good thing to get a tame GCS to aggro against? I captured a goblin thief and dumped it in to provoke spidey to shoot his webs over my cage traps, but no joy.

By the way, for anyone wondering, I've come up with a new plot for the original beastie of this thread (the three eyed crab thing). From now on, anyone wishing to graduate to any position of higher nobility (baron, etc.) or the position of commander/captain, will have to take down one of the non-useful, captured FB's (like crabby) in the arena, one-on-one to prove their worth.

Wild, hostile animal creature.  Goblin will be programmed to flee, not fight, where a wild animal will likely fight, especially if it has loves_fighting tag. Something like a crundle maybe?
