He stood up unsteadily, swallowing at the sight of the two bandits by him. He was still pale, though the wounds had already stopped bleeding.

Instead of giving a sound thrashing, Barthus was unpleasantly surprised to have received a sound thrashing. He was still standing, but he really didn't want to be standing anymore. Collapsing into something soft and fluffy would be such a pleasant experience. But no.
