DF2014: Day One predictions
« on: April 10, 2014, 03:18:20 am »

We all have high hopes for the next release (to varying degrees), whenever that's gonna be.
But once it's finally out...What do you expect the first 24 hours to be?

Chaos and total anarchy?
A whole waterfall of threads across all sections of the upper boards?
What about the wiki?

(or you know, nothing's gonna happen because the server will outright melt and won't be available for the first day or so...)

The server will crash probably near instantaneously and hundreds of people will probably be pressing F5 so fast that the server will catch fire and explode.

and once the server is repaired the forums will be spammed by hype posts and go dow, but yes chaos and total anarchy I think is a good prediction

and then once the forums are back up the general collective of chaos and total anarchy will move on to update wiki pages, allowing that to catch fire and explode. But in a milder fashion.

Everything will be civil and we will make reasonable remarks about the new content.

Fortress players will be angry about everything, particularly with the “lack of new features” (despite having multi-tile trees, possibly 3D veins, and all the new plants and special sites). Adventure mode players will get angry about dying in new ways, despite the new sites and evolution of the world.

A lot of people will be buying new computers, and hopefully the game will be updated on a more frequent basis from now on though.

1. Flood of downloads
2. Servers slow down horribly
3. Forum threads of people uploading the game to different download locations
4. Bay12 gets a small fortune in donations

Anything could happen. The earth has never experienced something on this momentous scale before. A time-space anomaly could suddenly appear and future beings could hand us DF5014 instead, or a fluffy wambler could reveal itself to mankind as the messiah and lead mankind to enlightenment, or the average DF player could become a virile sex symbol and be chased by crowds of the opposite sex down the streets. The awesomeness of the new release could start a resonance cascade on a subatomic level that blasts half of the planet into outer space. There's simply no way to predict the looming impact that DF2014 will make in propelling mankind beyond its former limits on the axes of the social, the ecological, or the theological.

It's even possible that people from the lower boards might post in the upper boards once or twice.

Well, that sounds reasonable enough...

It's even possible that people from the lower boards might post in the upper boards once or twice.
Now THAT sounds too absurd, sorry.

@topic

Well, I know what's gonna happen to me when DF2014 is released: I'm gonna dedicate my entire gaming time to only 2 games for a long time: Dwarf Fortress and Dark Souls II. Probably gonna go crazy at sometime too. It's gonna be FUN in so many levels  :D

I'm betting there are large amounts of SCIENCE in the works. That's what usually happens when there's a new release.

You're missing his joke. :P He's from the lower boards.

I think we've been pretty good in minimizing duplicate bug reports. The MC bug report stuff (which uses a different system than the mantis bugtracker) has like 50%+ of it being duplicates.

I'll also predict many old bugs being fixed or simply no longer existing.

The wiki will take some time to update, but we could actually set up templates right now with the information we already have.

I'm betting there are large amounts of SCIENCE in the works. That's what usually happens when there's a new release.

I already have an idea or two. Whether I actually will do a fort dedicated to the fishing industry to test fish extinction and recovery is up in the air though. Could make a seashore fort for that one.

A new wave of !!SCIENCE!! experiments concerning jumping enemy mechanics, exploding firebomb fruit trees, and !!FUN!! with the new material emission mechanics, and research into multitile tree growth patterns (with respect to their invading walls, and thus possibly puncturing magma tubes, and creating natural disasters.)

Followed up with a healthy dose of people complaining about the new mechanics (farming looks like it will be hit hard), and how they break old gameplay mainstays-- The occasional post asking where all the plump helmets went.

A rash of stories in the adv-mode forums with turn-based play adventures, and a new wave of succession forts.

Mod forum will explode; A rash of people wanting updated versions of therapist and dfhack will hang like a cloying odor.

you know, the usual.

And who knows, maybe a few long standing bugs will finally be fixed-- like the beekeeper bug.

Actually, I don't think the basic farming mechanics will have changed, but the way farming works and the industries that feed off it's products HAS gotten more complex.

As far as science goes, don't forget the new environmental controls in the arena mode, that will open up LOADS of science that can be done in arena mode alone. About the only environmental attributes that we can't change are gravity and atmospheric pressure.
