If you get scum-ified, you get notified of your loss as the Hattori get their hooks into you for the rest of your life, and then you have to continue playing.
Not playing against your long-term interests, you've already lost.

This is a terrible fix.  It leaves a scumteam member with no motivation to support the scumteam, which is something not seen outside of bastard games.  It leaves an essentially dead player walking (no wincon = little point).  Basically, it's worse than imbalanced: it's not fun.

Perhaps our good samurai commits suicide instead?

I thought about it, but it could be exploited in order to implicate scum, and it also ruins the alignment uncertainty angle.
I'd much rather just play with it and see how it pans out, but if so many people are convinced that it's a gamebreaker, I'll change it.

Honestly, I didn't actually think there would be so many players here who'd willingly switch just to get an 'easy win'. Which is meaningless, as we don't even record stats.

Why not make it so that they become the mafia? A fallen samurai, they become Ronin, and their wincon is changed to the mafia's. It's a risk vs reward sort of deal. Instead of taking it out or something, just make them have to support the mafia now.

Yeah actually the suicide thing would make it a Weak Cop, and those lead to weird strategies.  If you made it "That player loses and kills themselves" it would sortof work I guess, although really I feel like being stuck protecting mafia forever may be enough of a punishment.

A: Expect them to continue playing after losing and hold faith
or
B: Expect them to play against their wincon and hold faith

I'd do it. Judging by your actions in previous games, you would too.

I have never once played in a game which expected me to continue playing after telling me I've lost, and in particular I've never had a game tell me that I've lost before telling me who the mafia and expecting me to keep playing for some reason.  What does "hold faith" even mean here, anyway?  They have a 0% chance of winning.  There is nothing to have faith in.  They have no motivation to do anything.

Idea: Just have the samurai be stuck protecting whoever they protected, and give them a private chat with that player only.  No win condition changes, no confirmation of the protected's alignment, and no dead players walking.

That would make the samurai a "friendly neighbour" (confirms their alignment to someone else) but that's probably still ok.

Maybe the samurai should be notified when the protected character performs a nightkill? That might be interesting.
