Guess we'll go with Defense and give it to our trigger happy heavy. She did get shot and panic last time, so I suppose she needs the help.

Yoink: Only other Australian I've got is a Rookie, so no guarantee you'll get Support. But I can have you take support perks if/when they got offered to you if you aren't one. Also, shotguns are very much a close and personal gun in this game, which kinda goes against your tactics. Best I can do for looks is the helmet, sorry.

birdy51: We have two Americans, but other people have first dibs on them so you might have to wait a bit. Also, smoke grenades are a Support Class only item in this game, but once we unlock some more stuff I could give you flashbangs or the like for that role.

Yeah, I know about shotguns, but in my experience the basic assault rifles are pretty much useless.
Just have my guy support the squad more closely until he can get a better gun, I guess. :) Also, if I got lucky with training roulette and managed to mix up healing perks with, say, the assault's reaction shots and reflexes... damn, that'd be pretty awesome.

Flashbangs are just as good!

I suppose I shall take the German instead then. My name is already ambiguously German anyways, so it works out. :P

A few days have passed. We ordered some new recruits who just showed up. Mostly ladies.
Rookie - Australia - Female - Will 57 - Aim 70
Rookie - Italy - Female - Will 31 - Aim 65
Rookie - Netherlands - Male - Will 55 - Aim 70
Rookie - Ireland - Female - Will 45 - Aim 70

That's all we'll probably have in the barracks for at least a while. So people can either pick one of the existing soldiers (all listed in the OP) or choose to wait until we decide to spend more money on troops. I've also updated the OP with everyone's soldier. If you want changes, let me know. Unless you state otherwise I'm keeping your soldiers with my default colorization scheme and the basic helmet. There are quite a few options as far as hair color goes, and the girls at least have a lot of styles available (the guys don't have much, it's all pretty short except the Guile flattop). Lots of hats, though, and a wide selection of helmets.

Research into the Fragments has also completed. We now have 1 Scope and 1 Medkit in our inventory for the next mission.

What shall we research next?

  I'll take the Aussie.
Leave her as generic until promotion, then I will customise her.

I've not played Enemy Within, so I'm not sure exactly what the last two research options do.
That said, I think we should probably delve into xeno-biology now, since if I'm remembering rightly that gives a bonus to most research further down the track. :)

Options are:
Xeno Biology - Leads to us being able to capture live aliens + autopsies. These give us bonuses to research (live) and often unlock Foundry upgrades or gear (dead).
Alien Materials - Leads to better armor
Experimental Warfare - Unlocks the Foundry which lets us research a bunch of upgrades for everything and SHIVs. Plus we get access to more gear.
Meld recombination - Unlocks Genetic manipulation and MEC Troopers, although we'll have to build the appropriate buildings first.

There aren't really any bad answers, of course, as all of these will help and we'll want all of them eventually.

Xeno biology. Those aliens have given us their lives... the least we can do is use their bodies for SCIENCE!

-- COMMANDER: I think Xeno-Biology is our next focus. I want to see how close the aliens match up to what I'm expecting.
-- Vahlen:Very good, Commander.

[some days later]
-- Bradford: Commander, we've got a UFO contact!

-- COMMANDER: Scramble fighters! Let's take this thing down!

-- Bradford: Bogey is down!
-- COMMANDER: Get the troops ready, we're going to send in a squad to capture that thing before the aliens have a chance to retrieve it!

Question now is...who do you guys want to send? Pretty much everyone is out of sick bay now, barring our Nigerian Assault Lady who none of you have claimed anyway.

You have a bit of time, I'm not going to play any more tonight, so I'll pick this back up again sometime tomorrow. This also gives those of you with soldier decisions to make some time to make those decisions.

I volunteer as tribute!

I'll go, can I get a med-kit? (If I have a soldier, that is)

You do, I gave you the Irish guy. I don't know if the name is something you'd see in Ireland, but at least it's possible.
