XCOM: Enemy Within - We've had our ups and downs, I admit
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:42:22 am »

I'm taking the day off of work sick, and decided that doing an LP of Enemy within sounded fun. It's probably a horrible idea and many soldiers will die, but that's X-com for you.

We'll be going Ironman Classic for this, just to make things even worse for our poor soldiers (not impossible, since I don't find that as much fun). We'll also add on a few nice Second Wave features to make things more interesting.
Spoiler: Game Options (click to show/hide)

I also have a few tweaks to the game ini file in place. Namely, all soldiers (bar heavies) can use basic shotguns and snipers are allowed to use any of the various rifles in addition to the sniper rifle. Makes squaddie snipers much less useless. The strategic layer is also a bit different, with more UFOs showing up. Also, Satellites and successful Abduction missions have a reduced effect on the Country that happen in but lessen panic over the entire continent. Failing missions still makes it quite likely that we'll lose countries, but this means that we're less likely to lose countries just because the RNG hates us.

As usual, you're welcome to sign up for soldiers, give me recommendations on what to do at a strategic level, and bemoan our horrible fates as I try to play X-Com with a head cold.

First Order of business: Where shall we set up XCom HQ? Note that New Economy is on, so it's quite likely that whatever country with start will will have terrible income.

Africa is the safest bet with New Economy, so we'll go with that. Initial update will be out in a bit and we can start making some of the more meatier decisions. Plus we'll get to see how many of you actually get soldiers initially.

Also, if anyone has any preferences on our initial Research options now would be a good time.

Options are:
Xeno Biology - Leads to us being able to capture live aliens + autopsies
Alien Materials - Leads to better armor
Weapon fragments - Leads to Scopes and Laser weapons
Advanced Warfare - Unlocks the Foundry plus a bunch of upgrades for everything and SHIVs
Meld recombination - Unlocks Genetic manipulation and MEC Troopers

Weapon fragments.

The best defence is a good offence in this game.

[XCOM Base - Africa]

-- Bradford: I've been told our new commander will be starting today.
-- Vahlen: Ah, good, I am looking forward to meeting him.
-- Shen: Indeed. I am curious who the council chose to run this operation.

-- COMMANDER: You will refer to me as XCOM COMMANDER! And it's awesome to be here, let me tell you! I know exactly what we're up against!

-- Vahlen: You do? But...we've barely learned anything yet ourselves!
-- Bradford: With all due respect...commander...this is an unknown alien menace. We've barely learned anything about them.

-- COMMANDER: Let me guess, ugly naked little grey aliens shooting plasma at us? Possibly with some sort of Psionic powers?

-- Vahlen: That's incredible! How...how did you know?
-- COMMANDER: I'm from an alternate universe. There, this exact scenario played out in a video game I played to death called X-Com back in 1992. Trust me, I know what we're in for.

-- Shen: I see. Pardon me, Commander, but...are you dressed in Ninja armor?
-- COMMANDER: Yes! I wanted something that would inspire the troops.
-- Shen: I see.

-- Bradford: In any case, let's review the footage of our initial encounter against the aliens. I think you'll find it...enlightening.

(Double post to break things up a bit)

Here is our base layout. As you can see we have a lot of open space to work with. However, it will take a while to get down to the geothermal energy vents. We'll need to plan carefully where we expand to in order to maximize base efficiency.

[Barracks]
Here is the roster of our current soldiers

darkpaladin109 and RAM, there are two American soldiers available (sorry, Antarcica is not an option), our Sniper and a Rookie with really good stats. Not sure if you guys want to split those two up or how you want to do it.

For those of you who want specifics (Class, nationality, etc) I will hold off on assigning you a soldier until a matching one becomes available. If you change your mind and want one of the existing soldiers, just let me know.

General note:
Unclaimed soldiers all follow a basic color scheme, and all wear standard military helmets.
Green indicates Solid Will (not too likely to panic). Swamp is poor aim, Dark Green is average/good aim, Mint Green is great aim.
Yellow indicates Weak Will. Dark yellow is poor/average aim, Bright Yellow is great aim.

Unless you specify a color for you soldier, your will continue with that color pattern.

Later on I usually break soldiers into colored squads (All red, all Back, all blue, etc), although I'm flexible on that depending on what people want their soldiers to look like.

Note that armor options are limited right now, so it may be a while before you get armor that looks like the type you prefer. Helms I can do whenever, though.
