For some reason this really bothers me: "That's a good ideal; Let's get some ice cream". It's really common around here.

I dunno- that's an ideal I could get behind.  Gathering together for a icy treat is a great way to bring yourself closer to your neighbors and loved ones.

Where I live, its pronounced as it is spelled: ridiculous, like in "getting rid of something".

Argh. If that's how the spelling would 'evolve' in the future, just spare me the suffering and shoot me.

Reminds me of how around here old people pronounce window as win-der.  Or pronounce okra as okri.  Or ought as ort.

Drives me nuts.  I'm sure I pronounce some things stupidly, but I do try to at least not insert completely unrelated syllables into words.

I say 'ridiculous' as reh-dik-you-luss. I've heard that Coloradoans have the least unique accent in the United States, so therefore everyone else living anywhere else is wrong (logic!).

I've heard the same about the Midwest. My guess is that literally everywhere that doesn't have a cultural stake in taking pride in the local accent tells themselves this.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Probably right, but I can usually instantly tell if someone's from the midwest, or any other region that isn't a mountain state. Getting real data on pronunciation and colloquialisms/phrasing in the entire country would probably be way too difficult anyway.

I have discovered something worse than two-point ellipses...............

Using an arbitrary number of points..... and using them instead of commas or full stops.........

The pain..........................

"should have" vs. "should of"

This is what I hate the most. People who make this mistake really have no idea how English works at all and are basically speaking phonetically, without awareness of how verbs and propositionsprepositions work.
