Hello there! I'm Sheo, and after three attempts to get into DF over the course of an year or so, I think I finally hit a jackpot with this third attempt. Took the lazy newb pack to, well, get me off my lazy ass and start the game, and I feel I'm doing well. Turned all those newbie friendly options off, though just discovered the normal population limit is 200, and I'll have to change that. Even aquifers turned on, because I was inspired like that.

I read Boatmurdered and my only regret thus far was that I had to use a lot of wikis to get into the game and ended up knowing far more than I should about fun stuff. But fun stuff never stops being fun, so I'm at an advantage.

Also, another regret is just that, I have to admit, I couldn't get the ASCII graphics, mostly because of the way it's 12x8 what tickles my pseudo-OCD and that it's just kinda counter-intuitive to learn, and even though I settled into Obsidian for now I'm thinking of going to the 16x16 ASCII.

Is there any kind of looking down upon tilesets that are not the original, or stuff like not being able to post screenshots for everyone to understand?

Are there LP's like Boatmurdered still happening?

Are we really not supposed to ever mention that story that rhymes with Ogok Plantgod ever? Because that just raised doubts about what that pillar was and how to desecrate it. So I'm still talking about the tasteful parts(hopefully)

(And I know this is more to the doubt threads, but I have no idea how to make up down staircases. My dwarfs just refuse to make them or use normal ones, only thing that works is ramps or channels)

Also, this is a introduction thread, no idea if this is the right place, so hello there! Please don't tear me apart for my filthy newcomerness, if possible

Hi. Good luck. Enjoy your chaos and soul-crushing defeat.

No big deal, don't worry about it. There's still stuff that will surprise you in that "WTF?" kind of way.

Which tileset or ascii image you use in your personal game is nobody's business but yours. If anyone has anything negative to say about the way you choose to play and what you are doing with your personal game, well, they're just a troll and that is that. Ignore it.

You're probably doing it wrong. Most probable error: they must be stacked immediately above and below, not offset on the X or Y axis at all. A down stair must have an up stair (or up/down stair) immediately below it to function and vice-versa. This is not the place for that discussion though.

I haven't checked since I'm not doing bugs until after the release (well, I'm doing bugs, in the additive sense).

First of all, be careful what you say about tilesets and ASCII graphics. To have a personal preference is okay, to say one is better than the other is bad, and brings out more hate towards one another than the old days saw towards the elves. Very little is off-limits in these parts, and while its not going to get the forums purged, tileset/ASCII superiority should be considered off-limits as well.

Generally though, a rule of thumb is default ASCII graphics are expected to be understood in screenshots, tilesets may or may not. And of course, a good understanding of ASCII is useful when typing out prototype blueprints, but a lot of people create their own.

The easiest thing to do regarding stairs is to create up/down stairs in a vertical pillar, and not bother with up or down stairs. There are usually only a few circumstances where you need to use an up or down staircase, and its always at the end of a set of up/down stairs, such as the top of a tower. Usually even then you can manage with only up/down stairs.

And generally, I find this forum to be the most accepting, and strangely welcoming. But I suppose when you're bathing dwarves in magma to create super-soldiers whats to be mad at each other about?

If you want to stick with ASCII but want square tiles, I recommend having a look at Taffer's.

I use the tileset, but stick with the default color scheme. I get a nice sensible map aspect-ratio, but still get a 'classic' rougelike feel (and as a bonus - text screens don't have "junk" characters everywhere to make things difficult to read!)

Perhaps the true-type bugs will be fixed later this year, which would make things even better :)

Hi. Good luck. Enjoy your chaos and soul-crushing defeat.
Thanks mate! I'll be sure to.
No big deal, don't worry about it. There's still stuff that will surprise you in that "WTF?" kind of way.
The game does sound exciting in terms of surprises. My only ones so far were very little, and one was a major frustration. I picked up an embark location on a snowy mountainside, with a deep chasm below, picturing this incredibly awesome fortress there. And then I discovered that most of the mountain's inside for several z-levels both above and below was sand, somehow, which killed that impression a bit.

Weird location to find sand, but at least I won't run out of glass anytime soon.
Which tileset or ascii image you use in your personal game is nobody's business but yours. If anyone has anything negative to say about the way you choose to play and what you are doing with your personal game, well, they're just a troll and that is that. Ignore it.
The problem is mostly indecision, to be fairly honest. I like how practical and clean ASCII looks, and how it kinda incentives imagination and you yourself seeing what's happening, but there's also a good amount of this stuff in more detailed tilesets and it's easier to learn; for me, at least.
Yes
Thanks mate!
Yes. Stop.
Got it, and I completely understand why.
You're probably doing it wrong. Most probable error: they must be stacked immediately above and below, not offset on the X or Y axis at all. A down stair must have an up stair (or up/down stair) immediately below it to function and vice-versa. This is not the place for that discussion though.
I think it's something with the way my mountain is structured, or maybe how I dug at z-levels below reached via channels: It won't work on the first to the second z-level, but it'll work in the second to third, dwarves just don't go dig there for some reason. Works normally on other fortresses, though.
Probably too late, that's just asking for it.
I do feel the community's very good, actually, considering the status of most other game forums.

I guess that's something you kinda learn when you first hear about the game, haha
After all, it's what it's all about

I apologize if my comment seemed to offend ASCII in any way: I actually lean towards it in preference, I simply find it very difficult to learn and sometimes, to organize. I respect those who prefer it, as I respect others that choose tilesets for whatever reason. It's only a matter of preference, after all!
And generally, I find this forum to be the most accepting, and strangely welcoming. But I suppose when you're bathing dwarves in magma to create super-soldiers whats to be mad at each other about?
I agree, to be fairly honest. This is not a forum of mere strangers talking about a game; this is a site for jolly cooperation and science. Dorf science.

I have no idea how to thank you for this, mate. Square tiles plus more smooth figures that make it easier to look to and understand. I'm definitely giving this a try.

curses_square_16x16.png is a vanilla tileset, btw.

Also, "Sheo" is an appropriate name for an escaped lunatic.

I'm pretty sure most of the Community games at this point use tilesets, especially Phoebus. So no, I don't think tilsets are looked down upon. In fact, it's kind of annoying to make sense of a community game when everything is ASCII.

That aside, welcome to Bay12 Sheo!

Not nearly as much as trying to make sense of a tileset you're not familiar with...

Unless they make a goblin look like a barrel in a tileset, I think it's easier to comprehend visual tiles than ASCII.

But hey, I have never actually managed to play DF in ASCII so my opinion in this probably doesn't count until I've tried it.

Since things like '/' tend to end up as a jumble of things that I don't understand, it's pretty difficult to tell.

I'm relatively new to this game and I've learned the wiki is your best friend. I've been at it for the last few months. It's just so involved and so fun. Youtube vids help me, too.
