Hi. Good luck. Enjoy your chaos and soul-crushing defeat.
Thanks mate! I'll be sure to.
No big deal, don't worry about it. There's still stuff that will surprise you in that "WTF?" kind of way.
The game does sound exciting in terms of surprises. My only ones so far were very little, and one was a major frustration. I picked up an embark location on a snowy mountainside, with a deep chasm below, picturing this incredibly awesome fortress there. And then I discovered that most of the mountain's inside for several z-levels both above and below was sand, somehow, which killed that impression a bit.
Weird location to find sand, but at least I won't run out of glass anytime soon.
Which tileset or ascii image you use in your personal game is nobody's business but yours. If anyone has anything negative to say about the way you choose to play and what you are doing with your personal game, well, they're just a troll and that is that. Ignore it.
The problem is mostly indecision, to be fairly honest. I like how practical and clean ASCII looks, and how it kinda incentives imagination and you yourself seeing what's happening, but there's also a good amount of this stuff in more detailed tilesets and it's easier to learn; for me, at least.
Yes
Thanks mate!
Yes. Stop.
Got it, and I completely understand why.
You're probably doing it wrong. Most probable error: they must be stacked immediately above and below, not offset on the X or Y axis at all. A down stair must have an up stair (or up/down stair) immediately below it to function and vice-versa. This is not the place for that discussion though.
I think it's something with the way my mountain is structured, or maybe how I dug at z-levels below reached via channels: It won't work on the first to the second z-level, but it'll work in the second to third, dwarves just don't go dig there for some reason. Works normally on other fortresses, though.
Probably too late, that's just asking for it.
I do feel the community's very good, actually, considering the status of most other game forums.
There is only one thing you really need to know: "Losing is fun."
I guess that's something you kinda learn when you first hear about the game, haha
After all, it's what it's all about
First of all, be careful what you say about tilesets and ASCII graphics. To have a personal preference is okay, to say one is better than the other is bad, and brings out more hate towards one another than the old days saw towards the elves. Very little is off-limits in these parts, and while its not going to get the forums purged, tileset/ASCII superiority should be considered off-limits as well.
Generally though, a rule of thumb is default ASCII graphics are expected to be understood in screenshots, tilesets may or may not. And of course, a good understanding of ASCII is useful when typing out prototype blueprints, but a lot of people create their own.
I apologize if my comment seemed to offend ASCII in any way: I actually lean towards it in preference, I simply find it very difficult to learn and sometimes, to organize. I respect those who prefer it, as I respect others that choose tilesets for whatever reason. It's only a matter of preference, after all!
And generally, I find this forum to be the most accepting, and strangely welcoming. But I suppose when you're bathing dwarves in magma to create super-soldiers whats to be mad at each other about?
I agree, to be fairly honest. This is not a forum of mere strangers talking about a game; this is a site for jolly cooperation and science. Dorf science.
If you want to stick with ASCII but want square tiles, I recommend having a look at Taffer's.
I use the tileset, but stick with the default color scheme. I get a nice sensible map aspect-ratio, but still get a 'classic' rougelike feel (and as a bonus - text screens don't have "junk" characters everywhere to make things difficult to read!)
Perhaps the true-type bugs will be fixed later this year, which would make things even better
I have no idea how to thank you for this, mate. Square tiles plus more smooth figures that make it easier to look to and understand. I'm definitely giving this a try.
