Let's create a setting: Lighter and Happier
« on: February 28, 2014, 08:30:16 pm »

As discussed over in the Ashworld thread, that one's getting pretty grimdark. This should give us room to play with ideas that might not necessarily fit with it.

Same rules as before:

The idea is to create a complete setting. (As in, for a story)
One post at a time.
No leapfrogging.
Nothing which contradicts someone else, or is completely asinine.
And try to keep it from going pure grimdark. It's like a spice, a little is good, a lot leads to choking on a mouthful of cinnamon.

--

The world is split from pole to pole by a vast chasm, more than three thousand kilometers from rim to rim at the widest point, and incredibly deep.

Magic exists, but is only useable via several varieties of elemental spirits, barring certain special cases.

At night there is a vast ring/streak across the night sky in which no stars are visible that can be seen from around the world. It is static in placement and parallel to the chasm

On the east side of the chasm there exists a tall mountain with a long stair-city spiralling up its side counter-clockwise.

(I'm going to assume leapfrogging means I should wait four or five posts before I post again, am I right?)

There are a few points at which the chasm converges to only a few hundred feet apart, and here monolithic stone arches are built connecting the two sides, allowing some trade across the chasm.  The city-states built around these arches control the flow of trades and information across closely, attempting to make a balance between profiting off prices of passage and alienating other powers (or convinving them of the value of these locations) to the point that a desperate war would be preferable to putting up with them.

There are large (couple of miles) pieces of land where magic is completely unusable, and cannot reach into, scattered across both sides of the chasm.

Necromantic magic is common, and in several cultures death is merely an inconvenience.

The planet orbits around a gas giant, which in turn revolves around a blue giant star.

In those cultures where necromantic magic is shunned, the elamental spirits appear more numerous and active, leading to speculation that they are some remnant of the dead.  Others, though, say that they are simply scared off at the prospect of being seized by accident and placed into a body, or that they consume ghosts and that necromancy is the only way to prevent your ancestors from being eaten.

(Things that aren't elemental spirits can't use magic, barring 'certain special cases'. All necromancy posts are now invalid, methinks.)

((Maybe the necromantic rituals are just helping the spirits to use their own magic, and the elamental sprits are dead people))

(Alright, hold on.)
Necromantic magicscience is common, and in several cultures death is merely an inconvenience.

(There. We can go all Lovecraftian with the reanimation thing instead.)
