"Thieves?"

"Oh, don't worry it's just an expression. We're not all thieves, some of us are bandits too," Kaarina replies, unable to stop herself from teasing Elend.

Elend shrugs her shoulders slightly. She responds a bit strangely, however.

"Meanings can be stretched if you want them to. You could call me 'dishonorable' or a 'coward' or a 'traitor' if you wished. I'll choose to trust my own feelings over labels."

"Right. Except people get labels attached to them for a reason. People don't just start calling you bad names out of the blue, not unless they're particularly nasty."

"Which begs the question, why are people calling you all that stuff? Don't worry, I won't judge. Glass houses and all that, I've done my fair share of horrible things too."

She seems to relax a bit.

"I was merely being extreme, I doubt there are many who would call me such things, at least for the reason I had in mind. I'll explain it in more detail later, but let's just say I did something my family greatly disapproved of."

"Oh, you've probably heard it a hundred times before. Young peasant girl leaves her home to see the world, enamoured by tales of heroes and princesses, only to become jaded and bitter as she experiences the harsh reality of life outside of her village.
