In A Possible Future:
The ARM Vs UWM War, quickly given the dubious honor of being the fastest-finished war in the space age, by subjective time, at least, was a war that began out of a wish to protect humanity against all that may face against it, an objective given to Steve, an incredibly powerful wetware computer, who decided that in order to complete such an objective, he would have to overthrow the current, stagnant system that had reigned since the Altered Wars.
It was soon shown to people why such a system had been originally set in place, however, as a team of ARM accidentally gave an ancient god from another dimension a easy way to enter through to our universe, even the detonation of a ship filled with so many artifacts to be classed as a space-age nuke was totally unable to stop it, the team, upon receiving orders to remove and destroy all Origin technology, fell apart, one by the name of Pancaek became violent, dangerous, and the team was torn apart, Pancaek himself went on to be possessed and raze the very planet he was on to the ground.
The god quickly spread, no weapons could even scratch it, in fact, some weapons which may have been able to do so were turned on their creators, having been made with Origin tech, Steve himself quickly formed a temporary alliance with the UWM, trying to think of anything that could defeat it, Steve saw it first, however, he saw that anything which may have been able to do the job had been made with Origin tech, man had become too reliant on it, so, he looked for populated planets on the outskirts of human territory that had always rejected Origin technology, surviving using their own wits, and placed as many as many willing ARM soldiers down on the planets, before he and whatever remaining soldiers went back into the fray for one last ditch suicide attack.
No-one knows if it ever worked, but for many people still surviving, it didn't matter, Origin tech, while not controlled by the god as it was when you got too close, still went on the fritz, Amps become even more dangerous and unreliable, Manips stopped working entirely, while anyone with Synthflesh were subject to rapid emotional swings, spasms, or even blind rages, current FTL travel become impossible, and dangerous rifts in reality became more noticeable and common, for all intents and purposes, technology had been sent back to the just before the second Space age.
Until not too soon ago, however, as it turns out, the hole the false god opened to allow it to pass into our dimension has become a two way street, and using careful applications of remaining Origin tech, ships were developed that were capable of phasing halfway into the other universe, getting into some sort of universal slipstream, this halfway point between the universes had an odd spacial point, moving a mile in there could translate to light-years outside, or a light-year there to a few meters outside, it was difficult to parse, but eventually, through extended research, points were found that reliably transported ships in Duel-Universe-Space a considerable distance for minimal distance inside, and the New New Space Age had started.
You are part of the main crew for the prototype DU-Space ship named the Cricket, for one reason or another, you signed up and got accepted to expand the reach of humanity once again, to find that false god and strangle it with bootstrap ingenuity and to finally see the stars as your ancestors spoke about them.
