*salute*

I can see your point on the Hero Jim issue; Jim's greatest asset is his longevity and early standout appearance.  This put the idea of Hero Jim out to everyone, and it's stuck around regardless of how actually applicable it is, while Actual Jim has no real desire for any of that.

Hopefully you're okay with Hero Jim living on, because the ARM needs its heroes, even if they don't exist.

Thanks SC! I haven't been playing too long, but I'm still sad to see you go

I have no idea what happened but I kind of feel like a prick for not caring about Jim? I guess it's just a result of being so new but I honestly don't see the big deal about this. People leave games all the time and characters get thrown out. It's not a really big deal.

No. No he's not. Jim is in no way, shape or form, a hero. Consider his track record:

Quote from: Missions
Mission 1: Died in three turns or so.
Mission 2: Killed Erik, fucked around with Milno in the dirt circles.
Mission 3: Got infected, nearly killed the entire team once by destroying the elevator while they were in it and later on they almost died by orbital bombardment due to the lack of elevator, seriously wounded Mesk.
Mission 5: 'Led' a team and killed a bunch of civilians. Failed to apprehend the target.
Mission 8: Stole a bunch of shit (which, I wonder where all that went. It never got wrote down I guess) and intimidated scared, helpless civvies.
Mission 9: Almost got everyone on the team killed by making the ghost ship aware of them.
Mission 11: Killed the amp specialist through plot shenanigans involving people misinterpreting his character (he honestly didn't care about Grate that much; it was more of a 'sucks a kid is in this kind of place I guess' type of reaction).
Mission 12: Did nothing of note.
Guess we see things differently, but this list is what makes Jim a hero. A true role model here in HMRC. Dying, fucking around, getting mind raped, killing innocents, stealing, failing at things and breaking reality.

Perfect role model, I say.  8)
Farewell.

Well, I'm not particularly sad to see Jim go either. It's just the order of things, players coming and going, and if SC feels like he's had enough, well, that's perfectly okay. I certainly understand where he's coming from on most of what's been said. Probably the reason why I haven't lost quite as much interest in ER is because I've gone through several characters in the process, and even now I sort of wish Chief would get killed so I could move on to the next one, which is a sure sign of malaise if there ever was one.

I'm not exactly sad to see Jim. I mean, it still feels like kind of a loss, what with him being part of the original characters. But I've had the feeling for a while now that SC didn't really want to play, so he should do what he feels is best. Whatever makes him happiest.

Contrary to what SC said, Jim /is/ one of the more interesting characters in ER.  He's gone through more, and better, character development than anyone else.  He has the interesting position of basically being an everyman, who was given massive power and position without really wanting it.  He commands respect among others by merit of his longevity and power, despite wanting nothing more than to be a normal person.  He's a much better character than most of the wackjob sadists that people play, to be honest.

I'll miss Jim, as a character, although I think PW is gonna give him a decent end.  I can't really say the same for SC, because I only joined towards the end of his activity.  Goodbye, though.  I wish you well.

Yeah, all the carzy people are kind of... boring I guess. I mean, normally what makes them fun is them being a exception to the 'hero' team. If it's standard then the normal people make things interesting. A Han Solo to everyone's Jedi if you will.

Can you really blame people if it's difficult to play a normal person without them being hideously bland and uninteresting?

Besides, there's loads of normal characters around. Most of them are bland and without any distinguishing features other than a name and perhaps a quirk, I'll grant you, but nevertheless they're there. I'd say there's fewer whackjobs around right now than there used to be, actually.

Normal = bland and uninteresting is...not really normal -_-
It all depends on how the person perceives social or personal actions--you don't 'need' to be crazy to give flavor or stand out to others, as a prominent example.

@Pancaek: Screw the image of the beauty of the universe. Get an image of the beauty of the Doctor! What's more beautiful than a physics defying monster?
Or cake, you can summon lots of cake. Magical cake. And magical tea to go with the cake.
Or you can ask for a fireplace and make it snow outside the Sword. That way we can be certain Santa won't miss our ship.
Nah, just kidding. I'm just surprised an HMRC member is making such a sane and (reletively) safe choice, that's all. Especially one who got that power by injecting dangerous drugs directly into his brain in the first place.

The game takes all sorts of people, I suppose. If everyone was off-the-wall crazy then they wouldn't be crazy at all, would they? It'd be normal.

-snip-
You know, I was thinking about doing some silly shit, or just going for a power injection. I also toyed with the idea of rewriting part of Pan's first mission.

But really, Pan might be a bit unhinged to say the least, but he knows what he wants. He wants a goddamn break to screw around with his new stealthskin and read a good book.

Space wizard or no, Pan has no grand ambitions of power. Also I might have been scared that asking for power/items would have been a monkey's paw sort of thing
