Eh, SNAFU is a more appropriate term in this case; The situation could be quite repairable.  Just a mere fall is unlikely to permakill anyone, and Mesk can retrieve the heads pretty easily.  There could be something that eats brains, I guess, but we don't know for sure, so it isn't FUBAR yet.

And before someone says that there's a limit to how long a brain can last dead, I'd like to point out that we've never ever ever had a permadeath because of that.

Xan is correct that the cutoff time is probably higher here.

It isn't as cold as mission one, which is where the time limit was first mentioned for Jim.  I think that was even the same time we got given the "5 hour" limit.  Regardless, I thought you guys were going to be staying for awhile- days, possibly.  And even if the time limit is slow, Steve probably wouldn't have much issue with sending in a shuttle to pick up the brains.

I got my head shot off my a Shadow Walker, blew up a ship with my mind before I died, and then the Doc revived me and I asked for it, so he did it because it was interesting to him.
