one cage can hold unlimited creatures. Prisoners don't try to escape during transit, though they might escape if they dodge away from the one leading them - kind of like tame animals. Visiting merchants are a common cause as they attack the prisoner (your militia won't while it's being transfered from place to place) who might dodge to freedom (and death, usually, but that was comming anyway, wasn't it?). So yes, it works. It's what I usually do.

not really unbelievable if you consider this question:

How many dragons can occupy the same tile.

the answer is the same, unlimited, one standing the rest crouching.

As to my knowledge, a dragon is of  25 000 000 m^3 in volume... Heh. Seeing DF already being scrupulously detailed, I expect nothng but full quantuum model of dwarves in 20 years. Thankyou very much for the suggestion.
