Keep talking like that and you will be kicked out of the bay12 space mafia and nobody will ever find your body. >:D

a device that is capable of killing everyone and their worthless ancestors
What exactly do you find unorthodox? It's dwarfy to murder tons of people while doing something trivial. Just murdering tons of people is what goblins do. Are you a goblin sympathizer, comrade?

Good thing it is a fake nuclear weapon!

We just scare them enough to silence them and get funding for 3-4 months, and by then we will have enough power and rockets that we can assert our dominance by de-orbiting some space debris.
Who is "them"? Most nations would "fund" us with an FBI or SEAL team.

why does every body want to go to mars or Luna when we could go to Saturn or Jupiter.
Because Mars and Luna are closer to the Sun (more warmth, more solar power) and to the Earth (more practical to get to). Also because there is no reason to go to Jupiter or Saturn (or even as far as Mars), and because we can't.

I personally call for an Europa mission. Send a submarine probe equipped with a nuclear heat drill to pierce the ice. Then we'll explore the oceans under the ice and may discover alien life! The study of said life will give great insight on the inhabitability of icy moons.
Another achievement is mining asteroids. How exactly is not my domain though.

"I second the Europa notion! We shall conquer the plains of ice with our youthful vigor, speaking of which, I am requesting several hundred kilometers of rails, a crapton of sheet metal, a supercapacitor bank (several hundred farads in each capacitor) and a book on how the Lorentz force works. Also, twenty cubic meters of Jell-O."
Before this gets too far...how are we going to get anything to Europa? Barely any simple probes have made it to Jupiter's gravity well, let alone Europa. And you want a nice, complex robo-thing to send there?

We might also attempt this.
Sounds better than the Europa mission.

Also, are we roleplaying something or just planning like we were in the old thread?

I don't know. As soon as we come within sight of realism, I'm probably going to hijack the thread.

((On a side note, you could probably make a nice suggestion game out of this.))

Truly, the purpose of this thread has been everything. Continue on as always.

I mean, this did originally start off as a guess to how many people played dwarf fortress.

I agree with this. We should do this, win 30 million dollars, and use it to take over some small and politically insignificant country that will then be our base of operations.

"I've done it! I've done it! I've created the first space minecart launcher. Now all we need is some space capable minecarts and we're in buisness!"

I point to a shoddily constructed corkscrew filled with rollers hooked into water turbines in all the toilet facilities in the house we currently inhabit.

Urist McGtaguy cancels next action: Too insane.

"A negative magnetic field generator... Hmm. I can do that!"

Urist McGtaguy buys some copper wire, a magnetic field sensor, and a plugin. He constructs a negative polar electrical field generator!

"Here ya go, one reverse magnetic field generator. Say... That gives me an idea for a new power source for my rail system!"

Urist McGtaguy has begun a mysterious construction!

I am merely planning to build a railway system that would propel a simple capsule full of cargo, accelerating and decelerating at ~ 20g in case humans ever need to use it (It ought to be bearable in the short term). We could lay the rails with a cargo helicopter, and then resupply the any place where we have rails by basically shooting them with a railgun. To decelerate, simply reverse the magnetic induction vector by changing the direction of the current. The Jell-O is to further amortize any human cargo. I like the word amortize. A-mort-ize.

It is basically a rain gun, but the magnet is on the launch platform. It could do a sub-orbital launch without fuel if you had enough power. Maybe powered rails? The good news is that if we ever need to extend it we could just add huge blimps and it would stay at a reasonable height, they would need to be check via helicopter but once we are at that stage it won't be very hard.

The construct is finished! I begin building the cart for such a launch platform. I also order some security camera equipment and some rubber sealant.

I think you misunderstand how railguns work. The driving force is not static or magnetic alone. It's a combination of the effects of the Lorenz force (which applies to particles moving in a magnetic field) on all of the particles of the projectile. The magnetic field is created by the current moving through the rails (current creates magnetic fields, charge creates electrostatic fields), and the conductive projectile therefore moves. The vector of the Lorenz force points in the opposite direction from the vector of magnetic induction. That's if my high-school physics magery isn't failing me. Google it to be sure, I can't be bothered to.

Besides, for a functional railgun you need a magnet on either side. Railguns work by changing the magnetic field, which would indeed only work using the rails.

On a side note, your proposal is known as the Spacetram
