The real challenge wasn't in getting dinner cooked, it was in getting everybody around the table before it was too late for dinner to matter. Garen and Maryn would have a fine time exploring the house, but they'd regret not having a full dinner in the morning.
   She shook the steaming skillet occasionally to keep the vegetables inside from sticking, and, in the time between shakes, got out some of the cheese and shredded it. There was meant to be enough here to accompany the sandwiches, so she could still shred it over the vegetables when they came out AND use it for breakfast tomorrow. Mary-Anne sighed. She'd looked forward to not worrying about cooking for a week, but that wasn't going to happen now. She still didn't understand how it could have happened, it had seemed just fine, and nothing else in the chest had been tainted...

Continue cooking, embellish meal with cheese, because who doesn't like cheese?

Turn 3

There was meant to be enough here to accompany the sandwiches, so she could still shred it over the vegetables when they came out AND use it for breakfast tomorrow. Mary-Anne sighed. She still didn't understand how it could have happened, it had seemed just fine, and nothing else in the chest had been tainted...

Mary-Anne begins humming to herself, finding her rhythm in her work. Sandwiches would have been easy, yes, but Mary-Anne is more than capable of feeding her family. Being in a strange kitchen might have slowed her down, but at the end of the day a skillet is a skillet, vegetables are vegetables, and... cheese!

Giving the skillet a vigorous shake to loosen up the vegetables, Mary-Anne returns to the cooler. She worries about what she might find; she bought the sandwich cheese at the same deli she had bought the lunchmeat, and that hadn't even been edible! Fortunately, the bags of cheese look perfectly fine, even though they were resting beneath the rancid meat tray. There isn't even any rancid juice on them!

Breathing a sigh of relief, Mary-Anne pulls the bricks of cheese out, grabbing a nearby grater and getting to work. Four small piles of shredded cheese quickly grew on the counter: Cheddar cheese for herself and Garen, Extra Sharp cheddar for Floyd, and Colby Jack for Maryn. Neatly, Mary-Anne gathers up the remaining cheese and takes it to the fridge; as she puts it away, she is quite pleased to note the presence of several other blocks of cheese, and even a whole wheel of Parmesan! It's rather impressive how well stocked the Weatherford Group's larders are; Mary-Anne feels a little guilty taking advantage of such generosity, but she supposes that it's one of the perks of Floyd's job.

Mary-Anne closes the fridge, and returns to the skillet. The vegetables are done! Dinner is nearly ready to be served, assuming she can get the family together before it gets cold...

Vegetables: Steamed!
Dinner will be hot for only two more turns!

Well, he was in a similar situation. Since there was only one room on one side of the hallway...
Garen checks the only door on the right.
Continue checking the rooms! Must. Claim. Biggest. Bedroom!

Garen quickly steps forward, opening the door on the right. He flicks on the lightswitch, revealing... the bathroom? It's a nice bathroom, with a standing bath, tall, polished sink, and a mirrored medicine cabinet, but it's definitely not a bedroom. Garen spies another door across the room; this is the bathroom Maryn had stuck her head through on the other side of the hall!

Maryn, on the other hand, heads into the first room past the second bend. This one is a bedroom.

Like the lounge, it's an oddly shaped room. The left hand wall slants away from the door, coming to a sharp point in the corner. An unmade (but comfortable-looking) twin bed sits on the pale green carpet, running along the slanty wall, with a narrow nightstand and tall table lamp near the head of the bed. The window is tall and narrow, divided into squares by metal crossbars. It provides an excellent view of the valley road approaching the Mansion, as well as the garage and the surrounding forest. A large, black, iron-strapped wooden chest rests just below the window. Similarly colored wardrobes and dressers line the right hand wall, along with a polished desk and high-backed chair.

It's a spacious room, with plenty of room for play in the middle. It's very nice, but is it the best room? Prob-

The wind outside blows, and Maryn hears a faint thump and scrape from somewhere above. She looks up, curious. Her friend Jenny lived in an old house, and it made all sorts of weird creaks and groans and thunks. Jenny said her Mom said the house was tired, but Maryn thought it was the squirrels running all over the roof that made the house grumble. Maybe this house grumbled too?

"Shoot. Better see if there's a lock or something for the dumpster, don't need animals getting into it," Floyd muttered to himself as he dumped the garbage. He'd have to take care of the rest of the luggage, too, and then he'd check in on Mary-Anne and see how she was getting along. Then he'd have to go upstairs and kindly but firmly tell the kids that the master bedroom was for him and the missus, since one of them would probably try to claim it. They wouldn't need a king-sized bed, unlike himself and his wife.

Floyd checks the garage for a lock, as well as a means of opening it whether it be key or combination. If he finds both, he locks the dumpster; if not, he just gives up on it for now. After that, he gets out the manila envelope and the rest of the pertinent luggage and brings it inside. Then he goes to the kitchen to see if Mary-Anne needs him for anything and reads the contents of the envelope to see if there's a layout plan. If there is, he heads upstairs and brings his luggage and Mary-Anne's to the master bedroom and puts them on the bed.

Finally, he heads outside and whistles for Harpo a few times.

Floyd briskly returns to the garage, intent on finding a lock for the dumpster. He hadn't seen anything on the shelves near the Cyclone, but the garage is big, and the shelves recede into the darkness. Floyd walks the length of the garage, turning on the harsh white lights over each space. A neatly coiled length of chain, an empty metal bucket, a few loose bolts and screws... aha! Near the other end of the garage, Floyd finds a stout lock, complete with a key. Taking care to make sure he can unlock it at need, Floyd heads back out to the dumpster and securely locks it. That should keep the scavengers away, yes indeed.

That minor task complete, Floyd heads back to the Cyclone to continue unpacking. Mary-Anne easily had the most stuff out of anyone, but it didn't need to all get unpacked tonight, just enough to get everyone started tomorrow. Grabbing a suitcase of her clothes and the bag of toiletries, Floyd hoofs it back to the house. Having left the doors open means that he has much less fumbling around to do, and the bags quickly join the rest of the family's. Garen does not have too many clothes, but he does have his computer, and that can't be left outside in the cold. Fortunately, the suitcase with the computer has wheels, and Floyd easily balances the bag of clothes on top of it as he carts everything inside.

Floyd returns to the garage for (hopefully) the last time tonight. Nothing else in the car seems to be so important that it has to come inside tonight; some extra clothes, some toys, some tools, but nothing urgent. Floyd closes the trunk, then turns out the lights, plunging the garage into darkness. Grabbing the manilla folder from the passenger seat, Floyd kicks the door shut before leaving the garage.

He carefully opens the folder, flipping through the first few pages as he walks back to the house. Floyd squints, trying to make out the words in the darkness; the sun is pretty well down now, and twilight is advancing towards night. He finds a floorplan for the house, but can't quite make it out. The wind howls suddenly, nearly blowing the paper out of Floyd's hands; muttering to himself, Floyd snaps the folder shut and makes haste to the house, where he can peruse it in peace.

Luggage stowed: 4/4
Dogs brought in: 0/1
The sun will set at the end of Turn 7!


The raccoons were crafty, Harpo will give them that. But Harpo is bigger, and that gives him an advantage in this situation, of that there can be no doubt. He could not afford to show weakness to these creatures, for they were experts at exploiting such things!

Go over to the weird bushes, sniff. Repeat with other significant landmarks!

It's simply not impossible to keep a good dog down. Harpo barks excitedly, running over towards the weird bushes. Harpo does enjoy running, though it's not so easy as it once was, but Harpo has been in the Car for a long time today and is ready to burn some energy. Harpo skirts wide around the little house, and soon enough comes to a panting halt before two of the very large weird bushes.

Well, Harpo thinks that they are two bushes, but looking closer Harpo thinks they might be the same bush. They are tall and green and square and thick, and stretch away in both directions into the night. Harpo can see another long bush past the first two bushes; sticking Harpo's head through, Harpo can see a narrow path which twists and branches out of sight. Harpo can smell packed earth, and the living green smell of the bushes, and the crisp, calm air trapped between them, and the cold hard granite of the oddly shaped rocks in front of the entrance bushes, and the passage of a fox a day or so ago, and a wiff of something distant and dead and... something odd, which Harpo has never smelled but makes Harpo think of waiting and focus and mold.

All told, the weird bushes smell somewhat interesting, but are not worth further smelling right now, especially since Harpo thinks Harpo might get lost if Harpo went inside the bushes; it's a warren in there, for sure. Harpo looks around for the next landmark. Now that Harpo is further around the big house Harpo can see a new place, a small trail leading into the trees and a tall house that nobody has been to beyond them, rising above the trees. Harpo is intrigued, and begins trotting in that direc-

Harpo smells something delicious.

Harpo's head whips around, nose testing the air. Yes, there is definitely something good to eat somewhere in the forest. It smells like bacon. Sometimes the Maryn girl slips Harpo a piece of bacon to eat in the morning and it is the BEST FOOD and then Harpo wants more and then the Mary-Anne wife is angry with the Maryn girl and sometimes with Harpo which makes Harpo feel bad but not too long because bacon is SO GOOD. This smell smells a lot like bacon before the Marye-Anne wife burns it, and it also makes Harpo think of the Floyd man's pork chops which the Floyd man has never shared with Harpo except that one time the Floyd man left his plate on a chair outside and walked away.

Harpo licks his lips. The Floyd man was definitely angry when he came back but Harpo can still remember the taste, and the smell, and this is like that but maybe even better. Harpo catches another tantalizing waft; whatever it is, it's in the forest somewhere, away from both the big building and the tall building. Harpo wants to eat it, but Harpo also wants to sniff everything.

"Shoot. Damn wind," Floyd muttered as he hurried into the house. "Hey, Mary-Anne? I'm gonna go look for Harpo. I'll try to be back in, say, ten minutes? Dog wouldn't have gone too far, I don't think," he called toward the kitchen. That reminded him of something else and he walked to the stairs. "You two stay out of trouble! If it looks dangerous somewhere, don't go in! I mean it, Meryn!" Garen was a cautious enough kid; hopefully he could keep the little spud out of trouble. She could be pretty willful, though. He sighed.

The perils of fatherhood. Thank God at least one of the kids is responsible. He leafed through the folder, looking at the floorplan again, before setting it down near all the luggage and heading outside. "Harpo! Harpo! Come on, boy, come here! Come here, Harpo!" he called out, wandering about the ground randomly.

Floyd checks the floorplan once inside safely with lights to see by, then heads outside and looks around/calls for Harpo.

The smell of something positively delicious was something that Harpo found wonderfully motivational - while probably not a good idea to seek out mysterious, yet wonderful smells in the forest, it did remind him that the others would probably be interested in where he had gone off to.

Right now, though, he had a task! He could not fail the family in his role as an advance scout, oh no. He'd get this done by any means necessary!

Spend 2 AP to finish up landmark sniffing as quickly as possible!

   After Floyd left, Mary-Anne carefully stacked all of the dishes that were not currently in use in the sink and ran water in them, no sense in waiting until after dinner to start cleaning. Once that little task was completed, she would have to try and find the dining room and set the table for the family. It was rather strange, realizing that she was in such a strange place that she would actually have to find the dining room...
   
   "Garen, Maryn," Mary-Anne called up the stairs as soon as she got out of the kitchen. "Dinner is ready! Come down while it's still hot, the house will still be here after dinner!"

Prep dishes for future cleaning, Send out first call to children, make sure those funny burners are indeed off, embark to find living room.

Turn 4


"I call this one!"

Having staked her claim to the room, Maryn begins searching to find a better room. Heading back down the hall, she opens the door opposite the grandfather clock and reaches inside to flip the lightswitch. Soft yellow lights from simple stand lamps placed in the corners of the room illuminate the Library. A surprisingly large collection of bookcases fill the space, each shelf crammed with books. To the left, a comfy-looking sofa and a polished desk and chair serve as a reading nook near the lone window. A matching wooden filing cabinet stands next to the desk.

Maryn cranes her neck, peering between the stacks. This room seems very quiet- maybe it's the carpet?- and Maryn can't see everything from the doorway, but she can see enough to know that this isn't a bedroom. Looking back up the hallway, Garen has opened the other two doors, so there's no point in checking out those rooms just now. The only entrance to the attic that Maryn can see is the hatch in the ceiling. The pull cord is pretty high up, but that shouldn't be too big of a problem, since Maryn is an excellent jumper.

Maryn hears Mom calling from downstairs, but surely there's time for more exploring before dinner, right?

Maryn Objective set!

An ineffable anxiety grips Garen as Maryn calls out dibs on her room. It's a pretty good room, big and comfy and... scenic. But these other rooms must be bedrooms, right? They'll have the same view, right? Right?

Moving to the end of the hall, Garen opens the door and flips on the light. It's a bedroom, alright; probably the best bedroom. Unfortunately, it's surely also his parents' bedroom. The large room is lined with multiple dressers and a huge mirror on the northern wall, and a king-sized bed sits under the large window on the western wall. An ornately carved chest sits at the foot of the bed, and lamps carved in a similar style stand in the corners of the room, illuminating the space. The eastern wall has a large desk and a similarly large chair. The southern wall has a closed wooden wardrobe.

Heading back out into the hall, Garen can see Maryn poking around in what looks like a library. There's only one more door. This is it. Garen's room.

He opens the door.

For once, it's a square room. The eastern wall holds the bed, nightstand, and lamp. The western wall holds a desk, dresser, and chest all similar to Maryn's. Unlike every other room on the second floor, this bedroom is uncarpeted. The hardwood floor is finished with a dark stain, and seems to be slightly discolored in front of the window. It's, hard to tell, really, since it's somewhat dim in here. The lamp activated by the lightswitch seems to be turned low, and the light from the window...

The tall, narrow window is covered with cheap plywood, with durable plastic peeking out from the edges. Garen walks over to it, dumbfounded. Of all the rooms in the whole Mansion, Garen had the one with no window. No, not just no window, a broken window it looks like! What kind of Mansion has broken windows?

To add insult to injury, this room seems warmer than the rest of the house, almost uncomfortably so. Looking around, Garen sees a ventilation grate near the floor on the eastern wall which seems to be blowing a fair amount of hot air. Moving over, he tries to adjust the airflow, but while he can freely close the air slits the vent itself is not securely in the wall; it's actually a bit loose. Great.

Garen sighs. This is definitely not the best room. Well... maybe he can make do. The room only seems uninviting because he hasn't gotten settled in yet, is all. It's not like he needs a ton of space; there's plenty of empty rooms in the Mansion to spread out maps in and do some sketching. Yeah.

Garen runs a hand through his hair. Well, if this is his room, then it would be good to get unpacked before dinner. That way, at least he'd be able to relax after dinner.

Garen Objective set!
Maryn Objective met! +3 XP

Dinner might be ready, but a mother's work is never done. Mary-Anne brings the now-empty skillet to the sink, running it under hot water to wash the fat down the drain. It will be much easier to wash without greasy buildup.

Mary-Anne takes a quick glance around the kitchen. There might be plenty of table space for food, but there's no chairs in here, making it a less than ideal dining location. Walking to the eastern wall, she sticks her head through the door, and smiles. She's found the Dining Hall.

It is a large room with a high ceiling. Two rows of three long tables fill the room, with the chairs stored upside down on each table to ease cleaning of the floor. Large stone statues of Grecian physiques decorate each corner of the room. The ceiling is painted with vivid colors depicting a Biblical scene; Eve in the Garden of Eden, holding aloft a red apple. The large windows along the walls are blocked with heavy curtains. To her right, a broad stone fireplace lies cold and empty. Double glass doors in the wall lead outside, while another door leads back to the heart of the Mansion.

Bustling to the nearest table, Mary-Anne sets 4 chairs on the ground and quickly wipes at imagined dust on the tabletop. She heads to the kitchen, and quickly returns to the dining room with the children's meals.

She sticks her head into the central stair room. "Garen, Maryn," Mary-Anne called up the stairs as soon as she got out of the kitchen. "Dinner is ready! Come down while it's still hot, the house will still be here after dinner!"

Family Happily Fed: 0/4
Dinner will be hot until the end of next turn!

Floyd flips through the manilla folder as his wife informs him that dinner is ready. Mmm, something smells like cheese. Mary-Anne really is a marvel... well, the faster the job is done, the faster Floyd can eat. Finding the floorplan, Floyd takes a minute to memorize every detail. This really is a weirdly shaped place. Well, whatever, Floyd's a mechanic, not an architect.

Setting the thick folder safely on a bench in the Foyer, Floyd once more braves the cold outside. The wind seems to be picking up, and it's positively frigid. "Harpo! C'mere Harpo!" he calls out. Hopefully he hasn't gotten far, Floyd could use a hot dinner, and certainly doesn't want to be out here after dark.

Floyd hears answering barks... from the opposite side of the house. Sighing to himself, Floyd begins walking around the Mansion, still calling for the dog.

Harpo hears the Floyd man calling for him, but Harpo has sniffed hardly anything! Knowing that time is of the essence, Harpo ignores the tasty treat somewhere in the forest and redoubles Harpo's efforts on sniffing everything. He runs forward towards the tall house!

A narrow dirt path leads from the big house out towards the forest, and Harpo can see that it leads to the tall house, so Harpo begins trotting down it. It's quite dark beneath the trees here, but Harpo has keen vision, and a sharp nose, and keen ears, an- WHAT WAS THAT.

Harpo growls, his hackles rising. The tall house is not far away, a shadowy lump clawing towards the sky, but Harpo is bombarded with the rank, feral scent of raccoon. The small house smelled of raccoons that were living nearby, but now Harpo smells the presence of raccoons. Lurking raccoons, angry raccoons, hungry raccoons. Territorial raccoons, somewhere just out of sight.

Harpo barks, taking a few steps forward. Harpo must complete his mission! Harpo spins at the sound of snapping twigs, barking at shadowy shapes that move between the trees. A raspy call comes from behind Harpo, and Harpo whirls around, barking madly at the wide yellow eyes leering from the bushes. Quick movements dance at the edge of Harpo's vision, dirty scuttling thieves with long teeth dashing through the night. The shapes are bigger than the raccoons from home.

Harpo cannot smell the tall house, but he can smell the raccoons, and they are wild, feral, enraged. They are more than Harpo, more than the family; they are an army in the woods. Harpo howls in defiance, keeping the shades at bay.

They are everywhere.

   Mary-Anne sighed at the lack of response from the kids. Neither of them would let hunger beat their desire to explore the house until it was ten minutes past lights out, and even then they'd complain about the food being cold if she didn't see them fed soon. "Garen, Maryn! You have ten minutes to get down here before I come up there, you can explore after you eat!"

Give the kids a bit more time upstairs, then go up and drag them bodily to dinner. If any of them come downstairs for a reason other than dinner, shoo them into the dining room. If, by a miracle, the kids do come to dinner of there own volition then try to help Floyd bring Harpo in. Expend an AP.

Harpo is more than a little displeased at the presence of raccoon... bears? Raccoon bears in the woods. His position was rather untenable presently. There was only one thing to do, really.

Expend an AP to get back to the family house as soon as possible! Run like the wind and don't look back!

Floyd started jogging when he heard Harpo howl. Damn! If that dog's gotten in trouble... Well, that didn't bear thinking about. The family loved him; hell, Floyd did too, in his own sort of quiet way. And starting this job by having to take Harpo to the vet or worse didn't sit well with him. But while he was thinking all that, the rottweiler dashed past him at top speed. "Well, all right then. C'mon boy, let's get you inside. I know you don't like vegetables but maybe Mary-Anne can find something for ya." He turned around and trotted after the dog.

Floyd gets Harpo back into the house, burning an AP if he has to, then goes to the kitchen and eats the delicious meal while it's still hot.
