If the sparse lightning allows, search barrels and tables for useful stuff 
Take your sweet time, lest we make any blunders

Carefully investigate the room to the west
Account for possible enemy presence in there - tread lightly and listen in on it for some time before risking a peek.

Carefully investigate the room to the west
Account for possible enemy presence in there - tread lightly and listen in on it for some time before risking a peek.

You begin to tiptoe out into the room, stepping carefully over the bones, to avoid any unnecessary racket. Upon reaching the table you can just make out a satchel, a travelers cloak, and pile of burnt books.

You nab the satchel and place your dagger inside and don the cloak. You find a small bundle of 63 coins in the satchel along with a couple of mixtures in bottles. They appear to be the right color and consistency for magicka restoration potions. You make your way across the room and open up  barrel, meeting the smell of fruit. The heavy odor of unfamiliar flora makes your mouth water as you realize you haven't eaten in... You don't know how long.

You grab a couple of what feel like papayas and stuff them into your satchel. As you make your way towards the hallway, two sets of solid heavy boots begin to ring down it. You duck behind a barrel just in time for two kajiits to round the corner. One carries a torch but you can't see them from where you are hiding without giving yourself away.

 "There. That too. Get those books. Didja check the back rooms?"

"Aye. They were clean." A reply from what could only be the other one.

"Alright. Bring that outside after you give the place a once over and then we will be on our way. He be praised."

"He be praised."

One set of boots leaves as the other alms down the way you came. You get a look at the creature from behind. It's a tall kajiit, wearing a cloth cloak and hooded veil with fluted bronze armor only covering the the most absolute places, a chest plate, greaves, bracers, boots, and minimal pauldrons. It looked more decorative than functional.

You adjust your position as the kajiit comes back and leaves from the same exit as the other one. You wait a moment before following him out.

As the rough wooden door shuts behind it, you can make out the scene throughout the slats.

A kajiit in a more complete set of the armor, a finely inlaid sword at it's belt, an ornate shield in it's off hand, and a scroll in the other stands near a separate shorter one with a short sword in hand and a robed figure kneeling in front of it. A separate group of kajiits stand near a large pile of miscellaneous goods.

The kajiit with the scroll gestures and the pile lights up in a big gout of flame before clearing it's throat and unfurling the scroll.

BY ORDER of His Mane, under authority of lord grace Meridia, the light, our lady the aurora, you are to be killed for the practice of necromancy within the province of Elsweyr." The scroll was furled once again and replaced on his belt. "What say you?"

B-but it's legal! I can do as I-"

Waving the voice away, Yes yes. But this a purge by request of the daedric prince himself to the Mane. I can assure you, after you are all wiped from the land, you will be able to practice as much as you like. In the meantime..."

The blade ran swift across the necromancers neck, lopping head from body.

"Aright, pack up."

"Grab that head. We'll see if they recognize this one." A bag appears and scoops up the head of a particularly ugly bosmer and is tied to the saddle of a camel.

The party takes moment to organize itself, but eventually they all mount up and leave. As the sun begins to touch the horizon, creating a deep red, as if viewing the world through a pool of wine. You cautiously creak the door open and look out for the officials. You can't see them anywhere, fortunately, due to the sand being kicked up. That being said, you can't see much further than a hundred yards out from the small tomb, and it all looks like sand, some glossy looking rocks, and a lot of dry grass you don't recognize.

You grab the headless body and start to drag it into the tomb, to better your search ability, but quit when you get a whiff of the bloated corpse that has been left in the sun for a few hours. You search him quickly, but completely. Beyond just a robe the body has 28 more septims and a common soul gem. You bring all you get inside with you.

You walk back into the other room and upon grabbing the candle from where you woke up, make your way back into the room with the barrels. You didn't miss anything with your first pass over, except the sheer amount of charring in the room, and all of the things now turned into ash and completely unrecognizable. You munch on a papaya after setting your find down on the table. You decide on a short break before continuing on into the back room. As you eat, you notice the soul gem is starting to glow. You half jump, half turn to a noise behind you. The bones on the floor are spinning.

What do you do?

You get the jump on the apparition running over and delivering a kick square into the side of the twisting mass of bones, amassing to right itself. The kick sends the swirling pile rolling into a ball on the floor, before it quickly becomes a blackened skeleton on all fours. You rush over and sloppily elbow the skeleton before it can fully stand, breaking the collar bone and leaving the right arm hanging awkwardly to a blackened single bone. The skeleton rushes forward with a muffled version of that familiar noise of bone rubbing on bone, swiping at you with open hands, catching your arm and raking down only just breaking the skin. You reach a foot out and stomp on the leg, shattering the tibia, leaving the skeleton unsupported for the most part, dropping to an awkward crouch. It raises an arm, wrapping around your left arm and pulling down, to bring you to it's level but you successfully wriggle free, before you knee the skull off the body, sending it flying across the room, breaking into a few pieces off of the sandstone floor.

 You assume the officials hadn't finished off the thing and that the soul gem had just a bit more juice left connected to it, which promptly reminds you to shatter the gem with the pommel of your dagger. You take a deep breath after the experience and thank all of those kids whose skulls you had to knock together to get so good with your hands. You ball up your hands and think -it does feel good to smack something around again- as an afterthought to the whole experience after catching your breath and pacing a bit.

You decide that you should look into the back room, seeing as you have yet to do so. With reaffirmed caution you grab the candle and walk to the back room, past where you awoke. From the hallway you can see that the "room" in front of you looks to be little more than a continuation of the hallway, there is a medium sized chest, sitting in the center of the far wall, and the two opposing walls to the side have large slats in them which six coffins sit on each wall. Something sit's on the top of each coffin, you can not identify what from this angle.

What do you do?

Check the room for traps
These guys did not work alone - the officials might have left a de-parting gift, with this seemingly a valid location. If these things on the coffins are corpses, even they could be part of the setup.

Lootin' Time!
While a bit unsavory, feel free to take the clothes of those that we presume to have departed from nirn. Or rather, "hope", given the circumstances.

You creep into the room, taking slow steps as you break the threshold. The noise of gears locking into place startles you and you notice a space in the ceiling drop free. You dive into the corner, just in time to see a mace head fall, slinging through the hallway and back, crashing into the wall above the chest with a loud din in this small space.

You get up and dust yourself off. The candle you had in hand, is across the floor, but appears to still be burning. You scoop up the candle and get a look at the coffins. The little objects on top of them are what appears to be dried, purple flowers, that look to once have been night shade.

 -Well, time to get to work.- you pop open the chest and can see a chitin chest plate and chitin plated boots, with a small book, in the corner. The book has the symbol of illusion on it and the title reads MUFFLE.

you hesitate before digging your dagger into the edge under the lid and dig in some weight. The lid slides open with stone on stone. The inside of the casket smells like dirt. A dusty mummified corpse stares back at you from the inside, mouth agape. Plastered to the dry skin is what appears to be fine robes. You reach a hand out to touch and a smile creeps across your face when you feel silk.

"Hm. I guess I should do some inventory of this whole place before I head out. You finish breaking into the caskets and open all of the barrels and crates you can find.

You find:
3 silk veils
4 silk robes
2 silk shirts
1 silk trousers
1 silk skirt
1 strange copper amulet
1 left bonemold pauldron
1 leather gloves
1 bronze bardiche
127 Septims
18 papayas
25 figs
1 waterskin
3 water barrels
1 crate of assorted salted meats
MUFFLE spell book
1 chitin chest piece
1 pair chitin boots

You snatch up the coins and take a seat, pondering what to take.

Basically what Spectr said
Minus the skirt if it hampers movement, plus veils
Exchange the Dark Robes for multiple lighter colored silkstuff. Dark wear and desert heat is bad...
As is the freeze of the night. Don't leave any clothes behind, as we are lacking a tent.
Bundle up the rest of the clothes, bind the bundle to the bardiche. Fill with fruits if necessary.
Fill the waterskin. Eat enough meat to sate your hunger, then fill up on water yourself.
As we are severely lacking water-storage, make sure you have not missed any small bottles or the like.

Deserts are serious business while mounted - treking them, without the right equipment? Suicidal.

Should we be unable to follow the khajiit that - seemingly - liberated us, nor find any helpful landmarks, go south. We ought to go for the coast or jungle that way.
