You take one of the vials off the man's belt and try to smell it, but you can't find a clear way to open the thing.

Thats why we have that lever. Pop open the top with the lever!

When you press down, the lever gets pulled down, and a large blue orb flies out from the tip of the cylidrical side, and impacts with the wall.
The sudden jolt makes you drop the vial, and it shatters on the ground, causing the green fluid to start melting through the floor.
You're glad you didn't drink that.

Thought there was a thing missing a lever

Obviously the thing we found is a plasma gun.

Engage the sliding lever. It's the safety, I'll bet.

You turn the device around, to see the sliding lever.
You slide it open, and a small, empty vial pops out and shatters on the ground, leaving the now open chamber empty.
You notice the small blue light is now gone. You're not sure if it went off before or after you slid the chamber open.
Something smells weird. Very chemically.

Oh.... It's not the safety, it's the clip release.
Stick our vial into the device, slide the sliding lever back shut. See if the light turns back on.

You slide the lever closed again, and look back at where the blue light was.
The blue light's not back, but now there are three green ones.

Test our ability to aim by pointing the green lights at the body afterwards, standing some distance away, and pull on the small lever (not the sliding lever).

You take off your nametag and stick it in your pocket, then replace it with Mark's.
You then swivel the object around so the lights face him, and rest the cylinder part on your shoulder.
"Hasta la vista, body."
You push your thumb forward into the trigger, and you hear a satisfying sizzel as the wall behind you is assualted with green, corrosive plasma.
...Maybe it's not shoulder mounted.
One of the green lights go out.
