One of our cats has some weird eye herpes that only cats can get that makes his eyes all weepy. It's not treatable as far as veterinarians can tell so we named him Crusty. It's too bad because he's the nicest and calmest cat I've ever seen. My sister found him while she was walking along a road as a kitten starving to death while laying in a puddle.

He likes having his eyes rubbed and gives a weird open mouth cat smile when you do it, I think because he remembers when we opened his stuck closed eyes when he got home. He also gets in fights sometimes with racoons or opossums who might be going after our chickens, judging from the terrible non-cat shrieks that rarely come from outside in warm weather and his resulting battle wounds for us to tend to.

It cannot be cured, it can however be treated. It's the same problem as human herpes - so far we have no means of eradicating it completely from your body because once your body fights back against the outbreak, the virus adapts guerilla tactics. If you ever had a cold sore - you're infected with a herpes virus type I.

If you found him half-dead, he was weakened (DUUUUUH), and the virus activated.

Cold sores, worts, chicken pox, I would be surprised if there was anybody living in a developed country without some form of herpes. Damn things get everywhere!

My cat, Meep, has a sweet story. In this country, outside of the major cities at least, there is still a strong tradition of not bothering to sterilize pet cats, and drowning the unwanted kittens. A friend of a friend saw someone doing this in a village and offered to take the last of the kittens.

Shortly afterwards, this guy was going away for a while and needed a cat sitter. I agreed to take the little guy. We bonded hard and fast.

When the guy came to take him back, little Meep (I named him for the sound he made) cried desperately and reached for me as they closed the door. I cried for days.

A few months later, I got a call: the guy had a new girlfriend who was allergic to cats. He was going to put him in an animal shelter unless I wanted to take him. I got my guy back, and we've been best roomies for the past 2 years. He sleeps in bed snuggled up with me - and, in fact, any time I lean backward enough for him to feel confident he can get on top of me, he claims me as his bed. I often wake up with him tangled up in my arms, or curled around my head. He's also quite the troublemaker. He enjoys playing fetch with various odds and ends, destroying every corner of the furniture, and surprise-clawing/biting me while I'm trying to write or work.

Whenever I leave the house, even just to take out the trash or run out for emergency groceries, he gives me those torturous desperate eyes that animals love to give. "Why? Why are you leaving me here all alone? Why?" But when I come home, he runs over to me, I scoop him up, and he gives me a kiss on my nose.

Aww that's so cute :3

Watching this with great interest in the felines. And their peoples.

...Never had a cat. Parents had a cat..until it was [POISONED] by neighbor because of them sitting-hygienically-on the car. Never liked pawprints I guess..despite said cat being a really clean cat :<

D'aww!

But seriously, poisoning a cat? Drowning a cat? What the hell is wrong with people?

There are sad people who seem to view most non-human animals as pretty much worthless.

Ugh, it reminds me of the time I had a pet rat, and once shopping for stuff for him the shopkeeper told me he has a rat in the shop who had his tail cut off by his former owner. WTF?

Most of the people who do this don't consider the lives of the kittens worthless, they just can't feed them and know that if they let them live they'll starve. What they should do is get the animals sterilized, but there are two main reasons this doesn't often happen. One is that the villages are often isolated with no veterinary services - the people are poor and don't have the time and money to travel to a city to get it done. The other reason is that they consider it cruel to "disfigure" an animal in this way. They'd rather kill the babies before they get attached to them than snip their cats.

I disagree, of course. All my cats have always been sterilized. In my opinion, it's cruel to let the animal keep its sex drive when you have no intention of ever letting it have sex. Not to mention the aforementioned kitten-killing. But when I announced that I was having Meep neutered, all my friends threw a fit about how inhumane I was. You'll never see a sterilized dog walking around the city. People just don't do it. I guess my point is that while I disagree with them, I can see that, considering they all grew up in this culture and not the American one I grew up in, I can see how this point of view developed. They're doing what they consider to be the right thing - at the very least, it does pain them to drown the kittens, but in most cases they seem to just not see any other alternative.

My cat hadn't been sterilized, because we were actually hoping for kittens, but she was quite aloof in regards to other cats. But, here's why it is 'hadn't' and not 'wasn't' - she did get pregnant, except as it turns out she wasn't made for childbirth, and so she had to get a C-section, and got sterilized during that.

The kittens didn't survive  :'(

Spoiler: Cats Wearing Ties (click to show/hide)

New life goal: Make a tiny tie for my cat, somehow persuade him to wear it.

The third and the penultimate ones look best, IMO. The others look somewhat distressed.

Can't blame them.  I don't like wearing a tie either.
