The creatures charge up the stairs in a disorganized mess. Pearl stabs one with her dagger, killing it. You swing your axe at another but it ducks underneath and tears at your clothing. The third leaps at Pearl and latches on to her leg, quickly climbing up biting and tearing the whole way.

Your idea to hold them off on the stairs to have a height advantage isn't working. They're very agile and are excellent climbers. Luckily you don't see any more coming up or you'd quickly be swarmed.

You're at the top of the stairs between the cellar and kitchen of the lodge. Two furry grey monsters are at the top of the stairs with you. One is attacking you, the other is attached to Pearl.

You and Pearl are covered in dried, sticky blood, and Pearl is also grimy with coal dust.

You carefully swipe the one clinging to Pearl with your axe and it rolls down the stairs. The third creature tries to leap onto you but you manage to keep it at bay with a quick kick. It gnaws on your boot and growls at Pearl as she tries to stab it with her dagger - but she can't get a clear shot.

You both back up into the common room, the creature keeping up with you. You drag it through the broken glass but it seems unfazed. Its red eyes blink independently so it's always looking up at you and it sounds like it's going mad, frothing and growling.

You hear one scrambling up to the top of the stairs in the kitchen.

You kick the creature against the wall and daze it, and your next air-kick slings it across to Pearl who stabs it in midair with her dagger. It drops onto the glass shards, twitching.

The other creature at the top of the cellar stairs scrambles toward the doorway on all fours, and you golf-swing your axe right into it. After you pull your axe out of its body you and Pearl look around - the place is quiet again.

High clouds blanket the sky. The sun has fallen behind a thick band of cloud and will re-emerge in about an hour, only to set behind the horizon a couple hours later. Snow falls softly outside.

i guess that since we only have 3-4 Hours until dusk, we should return to the basement to check for loot. if we don't find anything, we should finish checking the rest of the building and then return to the rest of our party to rest up for the next day.

{Too many days since an update, so I'll go with the one we have}

You return to the kitchen and then down the stairs into the basement. Two of the grey-furred creatures lie on the steps and one is at the foot of the steps on the stone floor. You peer down and see the pile of membraneous sacs they emerged from under the stairs, but no more of them around.

You head down the steps. Blood drips slowly onto the floor from the two you pass on the way down. There is a rich smell here, something musty and sweet. The basement has barrels which turn out to be mostly empty, but three are still sealed. The floor is coated thinly with something tarry and black, and also plenty of dust, with innumerable tiny footprints overlapping. It looks like the creatures walked over every single inch of the place at some point.

There is a contraption of ropes and wooden pulleys hanging from the ceiling near the stairs.

The barrels are set up on their sides, in wooden racks, so that they form aisles. There isn't much room above the racks - they almost meet the ceiling.

In the corners of the room you find some scattered teeth, quite small, possibly human.

You don't find anything else, so you head back upstairs.

Your unexplored areas are back into the kitchen and onward through the rear door, or down one of the two door-lined hallways from the 1st floor common room, or up the grand stairs to the 2nd floor balcony.

I guess it would be a good idea to check the closest unexplored hallway first. if we find nothing in that direction, we should check the other hallway. we shouldn't bother searching the kitchen. The creatures we fought probably already ate whatever was there.
