This far into the building it's quite dark, so you strike a torch (I should have mentioned it before). As you descend the stairs they creak loudly. In the flickering light of your torch you see stacks of barrels in long wooden racks, stacked three high. There's a couple feet of space between the racks and the ceiling.

You hear breathing in the dark and look down to find several creatures in a pile under the stairs. They're covered in a slimy membrane. One of them, stirring, opens a red eye and spots you. It splits its membraneous cocoon with tiny sharp claws and works its head out. It's a grey, furry, humanoid with a snoutish face and tall ears. Both of its eyes are fixed on you and it's working the rest of its body free. The others are awakening.

I do not know what to make of the humanoid creatures. If they are hostile, we are most definitely in a pickle. Until we figure out the case, we should try to appear as nonthreatening as possible

Gnolls?

They might be gnolls. but it seems to me that they are more likely to be the gremlins than anything else. their physical structure seems to indicate that they are nocturnal creatures and their sharp claws look ideal for ripping and tearing flesh from their victims. Lastly, they seem to be group hunters. All this data make me think that we should vacate the premises immediately at the first sign of them attacking.

Oh no, my comment of snout punching was a joke, a suggestion I have seen a plethora of times.

You back up to the top of the stairs and ready your weapons. The one that was just waking up scrambles between the steps of the staircase and begins clambering up on all fours. Its deep red eyes gleam in your torchlight and its jaw opens to reveal a mouthful of tiny fangs dripping saliva.

The others are shedding their membrane cocoons under the stairs.

The grey furry creature leaps up the stairs and catches your axe right in the face. It drops to the ground spurting blood and convulsing. Pearl simultaneously slashes with her dagger but misses.

Three more climb quickly on all feet between and around the stairs and are quickly heading your way. Their slimy fur glistens and their low hissing growls sound like a block of stone smoothly grinding against another.
