The WHO has declared Zika a global health emergency yesterday. Two new countries (Jamaica and Costa Rica) have also seen cases of the disease.

It is a really bad time for someone to get pregnant in this continent, and it isn't going to get much better for some time (vaccines take time to be made).

Do we have any idea about how long the disease will influence pregnancies after a mother has the illness?

A quick check unveils that the association with microcephalia has been shown in women infected in the first three months of pregnancy. Makes sense too..

But... we just came out of an (mini) ice age. That's why global warming is actually a problem (with pollution making it way too fast and worse). Is that source reliable? Don't know much about these sites to tell.

Well, yes and no; we're still in an interglacial.  But yes, if I were to consider it seriously, I'd say my opinion is in accord with that of Sheb.  I don't think the comparisons to the Maunder or Dalton Minima are completely sound, and moreover, the links between solar minima and actual cooling effects on Earth are actually somewhat questionable.  The Maunder Minimum occurred not at the start of, but halfway through the Little Ice Age (which was itself not a proper "ice age" at all in the technical sense of the term due to being a collection of regional phenomena rather than any global event) and ending long before the Little Ice Age did.  It also occurred in a time of heightened volcanic activity, including what's believed to have been Mount Rinjani and Kuwae, along with a half-dozen or so lesser eruptions.  The Dalton Minimum also did coincide with a period of low temperatures on Earth, but oddly, so did Krakatoa and other volcanic events, and according to most measures, also corresponds to the tail end of the same Little Ice Age. 

Hmmm, by that logic, a solar minimum causes volcanoes.  Therefore, this solar minimum will result in Yellowstone erupting, and the thread comes full circle.
