When investigating how material properties are used in the game, I found that non-solid tissues ignore material properties. By definition liquids, gases, and powders will instantly fail.
I just got a forgotten beast made out of steam.
it flies.
Throw a kitten at it :D

Or glare angrily. That should do it.

One time I had a giant winged humanoid made of crystal (or possibly rock crystal or crystal glass; all I remember was 'crystal'). It was my first forgotten beast of that fortress, and showed up right after I opened an emergency cavern entrance to reach water (mass mining accident, I didn't want to lose half my fortress to infection).

Oh yes. That was a fun one.

I dropped a decent-sized chunk of rock on it.
and by decent-sized I mean 10 by 10 on 15 z-levels.
I wanted to give it a decent burial.

While true, I like to see it as Cuddles respecting his enemy.
Even if this enemy didn't deserve much respect. A strong wind or a splash from a puddle could have put an end to it.

I like to believe that the rush of wind in front of the cave-in killed him.

hey if I want your goddamn opinion I'll give it to you

@above I think it could potentially still be alive under there. it is made of steam after all.
maybe I'll drop the 10x10x15 block into the magma sea.
maybe I'll put a noble in there as well to commemorate the noble death of a forgotten lord of this world, stripped of his power by the decaying nature of time.

It'd be cool if some day DF would treat steam/gas titans/FB's so that they'd instead be exremely hard to kill. As in, how do you cut/bruise/pierce steam?

if toady ever goes far enough to implement some sort of religion, it could be exorcised.

"Thebi was a forgotten beast. It was the only one of its kind. A giant skinless llama. It has wings and it squirms and it fidgets. Beware its deadly blood! Thebi was associated with chaos and caverns."

... of Dwarf Fortress you mean?

Remember who the reading audience are - if something can be built simply, or as some massive, overengineered monstrosity, which way will  a DF player build?

Below my fortress there is a blob composed of water that shoots webs, how hard would it be to kill it?

Marksdwarves. Just one bolt, actually.

Or drop a few dozen animals on it and hope they attack him.

I thought Blobs were effectively immortal due to be comprised of one part with nothing to sever?

Only if they are made of something like steel. Otherwise, if they are made of something like steam, they're easy.

Steam, water, fire, anything that only exists as some kind of dust like sand or snow. They fall apart the moment anything so much as brushes against them. These FB tend to survive longer when their bodies have more parts to be targeted. This is especially !!fun!! with fire ones, since they have more chances to explode into a cloud of flames.
