'Nother european here.

also, Belgian/German beers are THE BEST IN THE WORLD. although of course there IS shitty beer even there.
Well, I tried both Belgian (Stella Artois) and German (Heineken) beers and I was severely unimpressed. They lack any taste whatsoever.
(Note that in Czech Republic term 'eurobeer' is used as negative descriptor)
You could be killed for that. Heineken is Dutch. (Also horrible).
Pretty much. Comparing any Belgian beer to Heineken is severe heresy in Belgium :P

Mea culpa. Sorry.
More on topic: other european beers I usually enjoy are Estrela (spain), Mythos (greece), Šariš (slovakia, about the only dark beer I drink) and Amstel. Also I generally don't drink dark beers as they are a little too sweet for my taste.

German here, from the Rhineland (around Cologne). Needless to say, I'm a great fan of Kölsch :D Also Cider, and generally most beer that's not too rich in hops.

On the question of serving sizes, a German rapper once had a line (translated): "A third of a liter is nonsense, who came up with that? 0.5 fits your hand better!" So yeah, I like the 0.5 liter / 1.5 liter servings best, even though it's generally considered odd to order a whole pitcher just for yourself :P

That sounds like classic comedy trope. 'A pitcher of beer please. And what for you guys?'

Coronas are nice. Especially during the summer.

Otherwise I normally drink either Granville Island's or Sleemens. Though I won't say no to Molson or most mainstream beers. As long as it isn't Budweiser. That has to be the worst beer I've ever tasted. Its like drinking pure lard.

To me, beer tastes horrible.

Tastes like water with a sharp taste mixed in with a bit of unknown-but-horrible stuff.

Ohh that would be the rotten wheat and barley.

I have enacted just that several times. The truly worrying thing: I tend to go through 2-3 pitchers on a good/entertaining night. Alone.

That once led to three of us going to Amsterdam the next day, hung over and wanting to see the sea.
Amsterdam has no direct access to the sea :(

Just give put Helgoland next to the shore of the North Sea with unlimited access to beer. Soon it will.

Sounds like you went straight to the run-of-the-mill "tastes like piss but gets me hammered"-beers you'll find in any pub. Find a café  that has a dedicated beer menu and let them recommend you something.

I could never understand how people enjoy the taste of beer.  I've tried a few, and I can't stand them at all.

Anything I drink typically has to be frutier than Carmen Miranda's hat, or a white russian.

The German hefeweizen and Belgian/Dutch witbier styles of beer tends to be quite fresh and fruity.

It took me many years to learn to appreciate the taste of beer. Just like Coffee, Sushi and a lot of other things. For me I think it had a lot to do with age and my taste buds. I couldn't get enough sugar back in the day. But then in my late teens/early 20s my taste buds did a flip. My tolerance for sweetness and salt has gone way down and my preference for bitter/sour/spicy has gone up.

I still generally don't crave beer though. I'm not like "Ah man 5 oclock, time for a beer." When I want to get drunk, I prefer liquor. That's why I only drink craft beers, I'm drinking them for the taste, which almost no mass produced beer has. I'm really glad I missed the "drink a 12 pack of shitty beer on the weekend to have a good time" bus growing up. Being a teenager in the midwest, that's describes the vast majority of my peers.

This is basically my story, too. (well, some details are different, of course.)

What annoys and saddens me is that my peers (at least the ones I work with), now in their early 20s, still think the only way to have a good time is to get shitfaced on Molson and Budweiser, then having mindless sex with some girl they met that evening, who is also drunk out of her wits, then forget the whole thing by the time their shift at work rolls around.

Honestly, I hear basically the same story every Monday, and it's the most depressing thing, even though they think they had fun.

My idea of fun is...well, many things. One of the many things I enjoy is getting somewhat inebriated and dancing like a madman in a club. Can't begrudge people who will pick up someone else in that situation if the opportunity presents itself, but going *for* that always strikes me as odd. Like...if you aren't going out with friends to have a good time with friends, why are you going out with your friends? Feels kinda offensive to bring them along, like they and their presence isn't worth a damn if you aren't there to have fun with them.

For beer, the problem I have isn't the taste. It's the aftertaste. I don't know why, but for me it just doesn't go away. Like I can taste it hours after a single sip of beer, and it's so horrific an aftertaste for me that it physically makes me ill. I have literally (and I mean the literal literally there) been sick from that aftertaste.

Now cider, that's a real drink. None of that Magners or Strongbow crap, that's low end cider. Give me real cider, like a good cloudy scrumpy any day. A quality real cider actually made from apples. Westons Old Rosie is probably my favourite that comes in bottles, one of the closest to real you can find bottled in supermarkets. A box of good quality cider will do you better, if you can find one.

A good perry is nice too, none of that "Pear Cider" naff that's basically apple cider with pear juice. A real Perry, made from pears, is darn tasty.

The trick to finding a good cider in a bottle I find is usually to look at the description. If it says "made with apples" (or pears for a perry), it's crap. Crap is fine sometimes, it'll often be drinkable crap. The "with" is marketing and means they can, and therefore have, added other stuff to water it down. Apple juice from concentrate, that kind of thing. They could literally throw a single apple into the barrel and call it "with apples". "made from apples" is the trick, "from" means exactly that: just apples.

So yeah, shame I can't appreciate beer but I've found a far superior tipple anyway :D

This, by the way, is the only form I can tolerate anything made from pears. Can't stand the damn things.

I don't enjoy it, so obviously no one does. Just saying that they probably know better than you whether they had fun.

As for beer, I drink mostly cheap market beer just because of the alcohol, although I occasionally drink it for the taste and not for intoxication.
