Brain uploading, digitally storing a person's mind in a computer.

If perfected, this could lead to a number of things, such as immortality, no need for food or water, and reality warping (in a way - as the computer can interact with our mind and vice versa, we'd be able to create any type of simulation we wanted).

I'm making a heroic effort to resist the temptation to go off on a tangent here about how brain uploading probably doesn't lead to immortality like you might expect.  :)  Nevertheless, this is related to technology that I really wished existed.  Computer / brain interfacing just has so much potential for so many things...
It's closer to immortality than anyone has currently.

I want a drug that brings on a sense of wellbeing with no long-term physiological or psychological effects.
Heroin. Seriously.

Completely off topic, but that Pacman and Kafka thing is the most metal description of any video game I've ever heard.

Anywho, I wish we had replicators, a la Star Trek, and the advanced energy technology they have to power them. A post-scarcity society would be awesome. I don't wish for the holodeck though, that thing seems like it breeds more psychological problems than it's worth.

I'm pretty sure heroin neither brings on a feeling of well being nor leaves you un-fucked-up.

Hot Pockets that stay preserved indefinitely at room temperature and come with a portable, disposable apparatus that cooks them all the way through in a matter of minutes.

A travel mug with electric heating coils to keep coffee hot however long you need it.

It'd find a way to ruin lives.

There is a reason for your body doing a lot of things. Even if it sucks balls. It's why being pain free leads to you cutting your finger off or burning yourself badly. Feeling ill at ease could be a completely rational response to a situation. Except now you can't. Or people could use it as a escapist measure. or I imagine someone could drug someone else with it and use it to convince them of something they wouldn't agree to.

To quote catch-22: ""When I look up, I see people cashing in. I don't see heaven, or saints or angels. I see people cashing in on every decent impulse and human tragedy." Even something as simple and innocent as this could be used incorrectly or with ill-intent.

He was talking about a drug that causes feelings of wellbeing, not a drug that eliminates your ability to feel negative emotions or think rationally.

It'd either disappoint, or be strong enough to use for a bad reason. Imagine, it could be used to make people withstand a daily injustice more easily. For a hypothetical example, a person might make a ton of money when Traffic Jams, and the more the better, and so has a vested interest in making people not try to solve them. Make people take it, they don;t mind, he makes money.

tl;dr the drug causes a conspiracy aimed at creating more traffc jams.

Every drug in existence has a potential abuse risk. The answer lies within the denotation of the word drug. A substance which causes mind altering effects. Somebody is going to get hooked on that mind altering effect. :-\

Right, well sorta. The only drug I've seen that works is Food and Vitamins, and I'm sketchy on them at best.

Recreational drugs, or drugs as a whole?

I'm pretty sure heroin neither brings on a feeling of well being nor leaves you un-fucked-up.
"Feeling of well-being" may not best describe heroin's effects, but AFAIK (never tried it, fortunately) it's "blissful emptyness"; a feeling better than any you have previously felt.

And the fuck-you-up part is actually just a matter of street heroin being incredibly dirty and contaminated. If you had an unlimited supply of medical grade diamorphine, you would get a hell of an addiction - but both mentally and physically, you'd be okay. Heroin doesn't attack your organs and bodily functions like, say, alcohol.
Same thing goes for addiction, btw: Heroin withdrawal is pure hell, but the physical part is over after a week, and it won't kill you. Alcohol (and sleeping aids, like barbiturates or benzodiazepines), on the other hand, will produce seizures and ultimately death when quit cold turkey, meaning you have to slowly withdraw over a period of months. Then again, alcohol doesn't get you hooked nearly as fast as heroin :P
