"Truly ghastly things, deployed a year or two ago to limit the severity of the Agaean civil war. No one's too sure why the deities would do something like that to limit it, considering that they're omnipotent and whatnot, but then again, it's common opinion that they operate in incomprehensible or at least enigmatic ways, but I digress. Anyway, those things are scattered across Agaea, if too many people start dying, they get triggered.
From what one of my contacts in the armed forces told me, there seem to be three distinctive kinds each with a different threshold. At the most basic, they fight like veterans and attack whoever the fuck's winning, if someone else starts winning, they'll immediately switch targets. Once the next few which are surpass even elite soldiers get activated, they get more organized. Finally, once the final ones get triggered, well, you get a problem. A monolithic fucking problem. You see, the ones that require the highest death rate pretty much surpass just about everything, even weapons platforms and when they get activated, all the other ones just go nuts. They start trying to kill everything in the area. Even civilians and random animals.
Now the issue is, you can't really destroy them permanently, they're border constructs, which means that enough firepower can bring one down... but it will come back. We still aren't really sure why they were only deployed in that war but not the other previous wars, but well, needless to say, it's really fucking unsettling. Especially when some more potent server access points such as grimoires and kitsunes are suspected to lower those thresholds. Well, needless to say they've pretty much become the publicized face of that civil war and for better or for worse, Agaea's military spending plummeted."
