Not necessarily. Mundane combat is rather unlikely to have any longevity, but what if they had to find the target first and then who was backing them? Add in some false flagging to make matters more complicated.

Portal invasion:  Portals start popping up that spit out monsters. Maybe some evil overlord type reigns over them?

Hm... I have an idea.

The basic nature:

Soon after the Layar war, several magic girls struck out on their own, attempting to gather power and carve out a nation for themselves. They were dispersed, scattered attempts, nothing unified, and were countered by the attendant governments and local magic girls without much incident. Though these incidents were minor, the effect they had on public opinion was far from it.

These events, coupled with a natural fear of the unknown and unfamiliar, have caused many non-powered individuals to begin to call for regulation, if not elimination, of those with magic. Some countries that have been hit harder by recent events have already begun to put such measures in place, including Australia in reaction to the sheer collateral damage caused by the magical beings involved in the Layar War's opening blows.

The group gets caught up in these events, perhaps in reaction to the laws beginning to be put into place, perhaps by coming into contact with a group espousing a more... radical method for the regulation of magic.

Any feedback?

Well that's fine a dandy but we have already stated multiple times that people apparently love us. It would be a little odd if they suddenly feared/distrusted us.

So don't make it sudden. Throw in some very very dangerous people, so people begin wondering if it's worth keeping the good apples despite the rot of the bad apples threatening to cause diseases and stuff.
