How are attacks done? In other words I see you put a line between me and the Raksaha that says rng 16 + 2 for hvy woods. On my figure it says R (+2), To Hit +2, and +1 for woods and the Raksaha has similar things on it minus the woods line. Which of those things tell me how hard it is for me to hit him and while I assume I want a lower number how is the hit or miss determined.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

See your mek's weapons and its ranges. Also this page: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/CBT_Tables

Your pilot's gunnery skill is 4.

Your Lao Hu's ERLL has ranges 0/7/14/19 and LRMs 6/7/14/21. At range 16 Rakshasa is in the long range bracket (from 15 to 21 and 19).

With those 2 weapons your hit odds are 4 (gunnery) + 2 ( you ran) + 2 (heavy woods in between) + 4 (long range, 2 for medium 0 for short) = 12 or 1/36 or 2,8%

Argus is much easier target, both weapons need 11 (8,3%). At range 13 its just outside the range of the LB-20X.

Okay, I was just using the Raksaha because the name sounds interesting. Anyway I will fire both my LRMs and ERLL at the Argus.

Only mek that Sensei's Rakshasa can hit is my Jinggau so it'll fire 2 ERLL and 1 LRM10 at it(just 1 LRM launcher to avoid building up heat). Hope you're ok with that.  :)

Draxis can only fire the Men Shen's LRM15. Argus is the easier target.

For Alkhemia's Argus both Men Shen and my Jinggau are valid targets. I'm the easier target now.

I won't shoot this turn.

Sparing the 8 turns of LRM ammo for the late game? OK.

I'll fire at the Jinggau and only shoot one shot from the auto cannon.
seems like my movement was bad I kinda assumed weapons were shorter ranges this might end bad for me

Turn 1 attack phase:

Quote
Weapon Attack Phase
-------------------

Weapons fire for Jinggau JN-G8A (Liao)
Gauss Rifle at Argus AGS-4D (Davion); needs 10, rolls 7 : misses.

Weapons fire for Enforcer III ENF-6M (Davion)
ER Large Laser at Hex: 0615 (Clear); needs 8, rolls 3 : misses.

Weapons fire for Lao Hu LHU-2B (Liao)
ER Large Laser at Argus AGS-4D (Davion); needs 11, rolls 11 : hits  RA (critical)
Argus AGS-4D (Davion) takes 8 damage to RA (critical).
            11 Armor remaining.
Critical hit on RA. Roll is (9+1) = 10; 1 location.
            CRITICAL HIT on +Rotary AC/5.

    LRM 15 at Argus AGS-4D (Davion); needs 11, rolls 7 : misses.

Weapons fire for Rakshasa MDG-1A (Davion)
ER Large Laser at Jinggau JN-G8A (Liao); needs 12, rolls 6 : misses.

ER Large Laser at Jinggau JN-G8A (Liao); needs 12, rolls 5 : misses.

    LRM 10 at Jinggau JN-G8A (Liao); needs 12, rolls 6 : misses.

Weapons fire for Argus AGS-4D (Davion)
    Rotary AC/5 at Jinggau JN-G8A (Liao); needs 11, rolls 9 : misses.

    LRM 10 at Jinggau JN-G8A (Liao); needs 10, rolls 7 : misses.

Soo... Theres only one hit and that hit is a rare armor penetrating critical hit that destroys Argus' powerful Rotary Autocannon.

How do critical hits work?

Theres always a 1/36 chance for each shot to penetrate armor. This is one advantage the cluster damage weapons have: more critical hit chances. When a shot gets through, it has a 42% chance to generate at least 1 critical hit, randomly applied to any critical location on the hit section(if there are none, it gets transferred a limb towards the center torso). On a 12 (1/36 again) there are 3 critical hits (torso sections) or limb/head blown off(other sections). So yeah, it could have been worse.  :)

When hitting a section with all armor stripped off or when removing all armor with the hit and applying 1 or more extra damage(to internals), the hit is automatically a critical hit(though with a 58% chance for 0 locations to be hit).

So am I useless now?

You have an LRM10, a machine gun and 2 ERMLs. If I were you I'd attempt to stay as close to range 7 (ERML's medium and LRM's short range) as possible, try to draw fire from your buddies, even attempt physical attacks. You can still do 15-ish damage/turn with your weapons alone. You arent useless, so dont die in a suicide attack or eject yet.

Can I just backup one space or do I have to turn around, forward, and then turn around again?

You can back up too. But you can use the walking MPs at max. Changing elevation while backing up also has a risk of falling.
