There are many factors which contribute to this. In addition to the complexity of the game and user-unfriendly interface (which are always mentioned), the most important fact is that DF is not a competitive game. Everybody here contributes to the same purpose, be it !!Science!!, megaprojects or plain and sadistic ascii violence.

Also, I'm 18! I came here because of the complexity of the game and !!Science!!, and stayed because of forum games. :)
