I'd rule that you have to actually be alive for it to be useful, so if you die before you can regenerate you're still dead.

Minor wounds can still heal pretty fast, though, and even major ones as long as they're not imminently fatal.

Tiny tiny holes for veins/neural pathes to the outer body, a case of magically reinforced metal, a big ol' clump of neurons to regen the body in case of brain death, a tiny heart, and some miscellaneous other things basically styled around a version of the Pyura chilensis, Living Rock of the ocean.
