My most successful runs in this game so far have been 'Captain Only'. I find crew difficult to manage and don't usually survive long once all the lvl3 pirate ships are dead.

This strategy relies heavily (at least early on) on the combat AI bug where targetting enemies individually in the pause menu will stop all other enemies attacking you for a few seconds. It's pretty god damned fun though, if you're looking for a change of pace. :)

Tips for a good captain run: Pick up the Treasure skill early, and island-hop for money for a while, skipping fights and running straight for the chest if necessary. Then go buy a weapon with at least 3 attack off the bat. Now go beat up some lvl2 and 3 pirates until you find a Brown Beard (+3 VIT at level-up) and make sure you have that item equipped on every level-up. Pump INT early on, stop when you're getting +5TP per level and use the item 'Stack of Books' for free TP in future. Then pump VIT forever for the HP boost at level-up. The 'weight lift' item (I forget the name) trains STR for free as well. Gradually pick up all the rest of the skills. For more free TP, activate every Tribal Totem you can find. You can also revisit islands with totems and re-activate them for even more free TP! Finally, you should never need fishing, your time is better spent occupying those training items I mentioned.

For EVEN MORE free TP, go hunt down every Event node you can find. No joke, when you have no crew, every single event is "Captain had a great idea!" pick the +2TP option every time. Profit. :D

By lvl30 you should be able to visit most of the world map without issue. Pirate battles rely on you grappling over ASAP and then focusing down individual enemies one-by-one. As long as you out-HP them, you're good. I find the Black Cape (+20% dodge) is a good help in this. And of course, consume any White Flags and other permanent stat-boosting items as you find them.

Best weapon to find early on: Spear. Don't forget to pick up a gun, too. Tomahawks are bugged and do no damage, otherwise they'd be awesome. Even a rock is better than nothing.

Sorry if I've repeated anything previously in this topic, I haven't read the whole thing. Hope someone tries this out and enjoys it! :)

I once shot a bear in the eye with a bow on the first shot, cut it up, found another one, and shot it in the eye too. The collective pile of meat weighed more than my house.

You can just pretty much hang around any port fishing for free food and occasionally sending everyone to the pub for morale.

Yeah the first skills you gotta buy is fishing and cooking.

While I can't say I've tried this, as I tend to record when I play (and sitting at an island fishing does not an entertaining video make!) but I strongly suspect this would be a good way to solve any hunger/moral issues between longer voyages. Especially if the place has a food shop, as even with one skilled fisherman you will end up catching way more than you need, though with a large crew, you might want two fishermen to be safe. Either way, you could happily sell off the excess fish.

Not only that, if your crew are hanging out at the tavern a lot, they'll occasionally get fed. It's uncommon but happens enough to help a little, or you could have them idle at the blacksmith, where occasionally they'll upgrade your weapons. I'm not sure if there are any other shops that help with that. But if you have training items on your ship, then you could happily just hang around and let your crewmen grind up their skill levels for a few days while eating fish and getting blind drunk at the tavern!

Didn't know about the blacksmith, definitely worth checking out.

There's no need to let them there for hours tho, I just go to the tavern and fish until everyone's full, with a little surplus, then go out pirating... it takes like a minute or two tops.

I'm pretty sure that the last patch was only a couple of weeks ago. Their twitter account has some info on upcoming changes: https://twitter.com/PixelPiracyGame

Of course it's still being developed! We've been working on a HUGE patch that includes a massive new PET taming system.

Also, all morale and hunger issues are resolved, the player now decides how much morale loss and hunger loss he wants in the game, as well as knockback.

Hey guys, here's a write up of my opinions on Early Access abuse and the scammy nature of some of the devs on there.

So this game is currently on a decent sale on Steam. What's the actual status of it? I've been interested in it for a while, but a reddit post about being weary of the game because it actually lives up to the "early access" title has made me slightly weary.

EDIT:
Let me clarify. I understand that Early Access games can (and probably should) be very rough around the edges. The reddit posting made it seem like the UI is nigh-unusable, and that's what has me most concerned - broken, unfinished, and/ore just plain goofy mechanics and bugs I have no particularly problem with. Given that I play Dwarf Fortress, am I likely to have any major problems actually playing the game due to UI and/or other gamebreaking bugs?

The UI has gotten some improvements in the last patches iirc. Sure, it's not the best (especially the weird drag & drop commands) but you'll get used to it. And hey, you're on Bay12. :p
I enjoy the game and would recommend it. The sale price seems fair enough.

I won't lie.  I tried to use both my 25% off coupons in conjunction with the sale.  Turns out I can't do that.   :P

Pixel Piracy is on sale for 50% off and is a fairly new game. It is also produced by our own Alex Poysky who was a member of these boards long before he was involved in making games. We need to support our own, chaps!

*Full disclosure: He's a buddy of mine and also I am one of those other B12 Devs that I would like you to support ;)

It's Early Access but it's fun. Further, Vitali(the dev) and Alex both listen to their fans and troll this forum and Steam's as well. You can't get much more for $7.50 these days.
