Well. For whatever reason I never really played this back when I bought it, but now it looks like I'll have to update. :P

Had to get it, of course! Got to play a little bit - fun so far!, though I wish there was a x2 or x4 time warp at least sometimes.

Very cool. I've had my eye on this for a while. I'm looking at reviews, though, and I'm seeing a lot of people saying it's buggy and unpolished, and that maybe it left early access too soon. That's pretty worrying, does anyone who owns the game have any thoughts about that? Does it still update, and if so, how often? I really hope it's good, it looks amazing.

The only thing holding me back from playing it more is the lack of respawning pirate ships. Unless they already added that.

So this game is up on GOG now too. All the "unfinished, "unpolished" and "abandoned" reviews are cause for hesitation but, for $2.49 I'm willing to say, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

pirates have torpedoes, right?

As far as i'm concerned it's "finished enough". Especially this cheap.
And to be honest there are not that many pirate roguelikes around anyway.

I mean the closest thing resembling this was Pirates and... Cutthroats... both are pretty old and not quite llike it.

It should be noted the game plays closer to a simplifed version of Sid Meier's Pirates! then it does any actual roguelike (in fact, there doesn't really seem to be any roguelike elements in it at all, even compared to other roguelites). If you know the mechanics of that game, then this game will be a breeze.

Any news on modibility yet?

I actually got it after I posted last. It's probably worth it for $2.49. I started playing it, and at first I was so entranced with the pirate theme and building my ship that I figured all the bad reviews were really exaggerating. Then the little bugs started to pile up. Pirates would kick poop into each other and damage one another, they didn't always obey my commands properly, sometimes they'd randomly fall off the boat, what have you. It helps that the game autosaves constantly, so if something goes wrong you can reload. I played it for 12 hours (a good portion of which was just having fun building boats) and didn't regret buying it on the whole, but the bugs really ruined the staying power I think it would have otherwise had. If the bugs were fixed and the world was just a little more fleshed out, I could easily see myself putting in double the time.

Yeah its got a few bugs and UI issues.  The annoying one for me was having to reset the boarding/crew/whatever categories each time I loaded.

I don't think I ever had anyone randomly fall off my boat, but its definitely worth getting everybody the swimming skill.

Once you get past the bugs its fun, but desperately needs more variety.  I think they are still updating it though, so there is room for improvement.

Okay, so, I saw this in the Humble Store for 0.99€, and realized I was still very much on the fence as to whether or not to pick it up (and leaning over on the "nah" side of the fence at that).

I remember playing around with this back in the early days of its development and having a bunch of fun, waiting eagerly for the next update to come out.  Personally, I think it went to paid distribution a bit too early, and checking on Steam it's not even listed as "early development", which considering how it was back then (and according to everything I've heard and seen so far on the store pages now), was also a bit of a mistake.

I really do understand the dev wanting to get some form of return on all the hard work he's put into this project so far, and I haven't a clue how strapped he was for cash at that time, so maybe it was more of a necessity than anything else in order for development to at all continue.

But looking at it now, particularly the Steam page, there's really only one thing I can say for certain...  This game desperately, DESPERATELY needs better marketing.

More than any of the reviews or anecdotal comments about the game having taken some design decisions that I don't personally agree with, what pushes me most away from the game is how it's presenting itself now.  From the Steam title splash to the bizarre addition of "Open World" to the title and the trailer I just found on the Humble store, I can quite frankly say I'm not too keen on spending even the pocket change I'd need to shell out for a copy right now.

If you guys really want to boost your sales, putting up 90% sales is really only going to make things look worse in its current state.  It's funny to think about how much of a difference it would make, but this game severely needs to present a better image to prospective customers.

I mean, like I said...  I tried this out way back before cannons were even a thing, and I loved the shit out of the buggy, not-at-all finished mess it was back then.  And I'M skeptical.
