The cannons will only be on it until the enemy hits the second trench line, they can shell enemies before they reach the first trench then be moved down afterwards.

The hydras I'm not sure about but I don't think they'll be any use other then against maybe enemy vehicles.

The Hydras are actually used fairly often as anti-infantry weapons, they can't fire beneath them, but if there is an enemy ahead of them they can fire at them.

A hydras range would be what? A mile + Easily?

When acting as an Anti-Air weapon probably, when used against infantry it wouldn't be much greater then a normal autocannon.

Depends what figures you're going on. If the actual ranges in-game matter, a normal autocannon's is 48", with a Hydra Autocannon's being 72", which is probably quite a difference once you scale it up.

If you're going by in-game, a Hydra will also only hit ground targets by luck due to the Skyfire rule.

Works for me, now let's see how badly our forces get slaughtered by chaos :).

With news of the enemy's arrival your men carry of almost dread at the horrors to come, those ordered to the front make their way there quickly having either been asleep in the barracks up front or quickly made their way across via the tunnels. By the time you arrive at your place in the trench line the men you ordered to the front are already gathered around, some huddled against the wall facing south and others huddled in groups waiting for the battle to begin. Shortly after you arrive Commissar Kalman and Cadet Commissar Malkom arrive, when you inquire about why they are here the Commissar-General just shrugs and Cadet Commissar Malkom simply turns away from you as if embarrassed by his actions.

You have no time to think on it however as the sound of your artillery pieces picks up behind you, followed by semi-distant explosions and the screams of dying men. You look up over the lip of the trench and see the enemy force for yourself, at its front a line of Leman Russ Battle Tanks charges full speed at your position surrounded by a cultists interspersed with halftracks carrying the strange Quad Linked Autocannon platforms you'd seen at the Chaos encampment. It takes only a moment for them to get in range and your men pick up what you're thinking right before you speak,

"OPEN FIRE!!!! Make them pay for the ground they take with their blood as we will hold it with our own, show no quarter and receive none for there is no mercy for heretics. As we are the Emperor's Hammer so are we His shield, prove it here today!"

All along the line men let loose a torrent of fire, lasguns bark amidst the constant sound of autocannon fire with the occasional whoosh of a missile launcher firing towards the approaching line of armor. Dozens of cultists are torn to shreds by the fire of the heavy weapons or taken out by the sheer mass of las fire hitting them, you see a three missiles go screeching though the air and find their target in the Leman Russ tanks below utterly destroying one and severely wounding another two. Your men kill dozens, but for every one that drops dead another two charge forward to take their place, and the enemy grow steadily closer until finally their armor is in range to fire upon you.

The first barrage of fire from the Leman Russ is massed along the left side of the trench line, a few shots go a stray but a large number find their mark in the redoubt there. Explosions and impacts ripple across the surface tearing a large chunk of the fortress apart and destroying a number of weapon emplacements, those that don't die from the blast are crushed beneath the debris or brought down by effective fire from the halftracks that slides along the trench killing many of your men.

Within moments the Leman Russ tanks and halftracks redirect their attention to the other, mostly unscathed, redoubt and before the barrage lands you've already commanded the retreat to the redoubts. The remaining heavy weapons and anti-tank squads cover the surviving trench soldiers, strafing the Chaos armor lines and sending a number of the halftracks up in flames. From the relative safety of the redoubts your men start a furious defense, coupled with an increased amount of fire from the artillery that buys you the time to pull your wounded out and retreat to the second trench line, beaten and battered as you are.

Moving with Commissar Kalman you look from the fortifications of the second trench line back to the first just in time to see a pair of World Eaters drop down into the trench line followed by a wave the foul cultist heretics. The Commissar and you have a few new scrapes and wounds from the encounter, but you find nothing to serious on your person, however of the force that held the first trench line those which remain are wounded and exhausted already. The tunnels between the trench lines are successfully collapsed, and you are given enough time to reorganize your defense as the Chaos forces stop to prepare crossings for their armor ...

What weapons do we have that have the range to fire on th trench/crossing enemy?
Other than the artillery, obviously.

Concentrate mortar fire on the trench we just abandoned.

(( Hows the wall coming behind the third trench? Did we recover the anti armor weapons and auto cannons before retreating? Or the usable armor and ammo?

Do we have any earth shaker rounds for the basilisk?

How many tanks do they have? ))

Basilisk to focus all fire on the enemy armor, use earth shaker rounds if any are available.
Get the wounded stable enough to hold a rifle then send them back to the front.
(( More detailed turn to come when I know if we recovered any supplies but damn we're in a bad position without having any heavy armor of our own. )) ))

Concentrate mortar fire on the trench we just abandoned.

And anything else that could reach into them, like Tophat said. Else, make sure that our men know that the World Eaters ought to be their primary target, once they become active. I actually fear that they will charge together at one, wich will put us into a very bad position.

If there would not be such a bloody onslaught, I would like to hold some men on the lookout for them, but scouts will have to do I guess.

(( What does everybody think? I think I'm gonna pull our auto cannons back to the third line now, they'll just get smashed again by the enemy armor if they're positioned and we can't afford to lose any more of them. I'm thinking for the second line to just put in infantry and anti armor then focus on destroying the tanks then fall back to third line to make a stand. ))
